“Asking somebody to close up their life that they built over a decade and go back to a country that some people don’t have any kind of connection to is beyond incomprehensible to me,” said Regine Theodat, of Boston.<\/p>\n
She said community members should continue supporting TPS recipients regardless of their economic contributions.<\/p>\n
“At the very least we can stand in community with them, not because they’re providing for us but because they’re human and they deserve the opportunity to live life freely,” Theodat added.<\/p>\n
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAfter the Supreme Court allowed the president to end temporary protected status (TPS) for Haitian and Syrian immigrants, immigration advocates have been pointing people affected to resources, but the community is largely in a holding pattern.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n
Massachusetts is home to one of the country’s largest Haitian communities. According to a Boston Indicators study, about 62% of the state’s 37,000 TPS holders are from Haiti.<\/p>\n
Kelly Harrington, senior research manager at Boston Indicators, said TPS holders played a critical role in the state’s workforce.<\/p>\n
“Those are often essential workers who make our hospitals and nursing homes run,” she said. “And the loss of this workforce we will feel this today and in years to come.”<\/p>\n
Employers also expressed concern about the uncertainty facing their employees.<\/p>\n

Amy Nishman, senior vice president of strategy at JVS Boston, said businesses wanted to retain experienced workers.<\/p>\n
“There are employers right now every day who are confused, worried and care deeply about their workers and want to be able to keep them on payroll,” she said.<\/p>\n
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tNationwide, one in five Haitians work in health care, leading to concerns of workforce shortages in the industry after the Supreme Court cleared the way for the Trump administration to end legal protections for Haitian and Syrian migrants.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n
The Trump administration argued Temporary Protected Status was intended to be temporary.<\/p>\n
But Haitian Pastor Dieufort Fleurissaint said returning to Haiti was not a realistic or safe option.<\/p>\n
“They don’t have a place to go because of the dangerous situation in Haiti, and understand that they build their lives here already,” he said.<\/p>\n
Advocates also said people who had already lost TPS protections were struggling to support themselves while living with uncertain immigration status.<\/p>\n
“The resources are getting short and they are running out, so that’s why we urge the Congress, the time is today to pass legislation,” said Jose Urias, of the Massachusetts TPS Committee, who supports a broader protection bill in the American Dream and Promise Act.<\/p>\n
Advocates also backed another bipartisan bill, S.4814, that would extend TPS protections for Haitians and Syrians by three years.
