But Iran war holds dangers for them"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">CAPE TOWN \u2013 A South African couple found themselves in a rare situation when they witnessed a humpback whale \u201csupergroup\u201d consisting of nearly 300 of the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/humpback-whale-migration-australia-brazil-4507fe77f565814156617430914756a5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">giant marine mammals<\/a> gathering together.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">It&#8217;s an indication, scientists say, of how some whale species numbers have strongly rebounded in the southern hemisphere oceans decades after an international whale hunting ban came into effect in 1986.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Chris and Monique Fallows said they were used to seeing bigger and bigger groups of humpback whales off the west coast of South Africa but weren&#8217;t prepared for what they saw one morning last December. Plumes of whale breath and spray burst into the air one after the other from blowholes, and the husband and wife found their boat in the midst of what&#8217;s known as a supergroup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cIt was extraordinary,\u201d said Chris Fallows, a renowned fine art wildlife photographer who has documented marine animals for 35 years. &#8220;Quite quickly we realized that there must be several hundred whales coming together in one particular area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">He said what they saw can best be described as a \u201cManhattan skyline\u201d of whale breath plumes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Chris and Monique documented 299 humpback whales in the group, they said. They count whales by taking a photograph of their tail, which is called a fluke, said Monique Fallows, an author and naturalist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Each whale&#8217;s tail is different and it&#8217;s a common tactic used by scientists to identify individuals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">It appears to be the biggest group of humpback whales sighted, according to Alex Vogel, the Africa coordinator for Happywhale. That organization has a global database of whales built off photos and information sent in largely by what it calls \u201ccitizen scientists\u201d \u2014 ordinary people who capture images of whales that are then verified. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The organization did a count of the group that the Fallows came across.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Humpback numbers have strongly recovered in the southern hemisphere from less than 10,000 at the height of whaling to more than 100,000 whales now, according to assessments by scientists and the International Whaling Commission, which monitors whale numbers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iceland-fin-whales-whaling-license-quota-conservation-0f0244a762e901b2a11607b1ddcf19bf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Only a few countries<\/a> still hunt whales commercially.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Humpbacks are generally solitary or move in small pods, but they sometimes gather in supergroups in food-rich areas. They feed on krill or small fish.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Sightings of humpbacks are also increasing <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/brazil-humpback-whales-rio-de-janeiro-guanabara-bay-e77bb9f47b1d57ccb4ede298f3fc06bf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in other parts of the Southern Hemisphere.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Els Vermeulen, the chief scientist at the University of Pretoria\u2019s Whale Unit in South Africa, said humpback supergroups started to be seen again around 2012 and it&#8217;s likely a result of their recovery from whaling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cIn general, the moratorium on whaling can be classified as one of the strongest conservation success stories in the marine environment,&#8221; said Vermeulen, who has a doctorate in zoology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Vermeulen said that humpbacks feeding in supergroups make <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/whale-sound-oceans-numbers-3423a9fa0972956428a54f324c1d6c73\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">underwater sounds<\/a> that attract other whales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">While humpbacks have seen the biggest comeback from whaling, the World Wildlife Fund says the recovery has been mixed for other whale species and that various threats remain, like entanglement in commercial fishing equipment, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/climate-marine-heat-wave-whale-boats-ai-5a12ce2ad68929a54ebac84ef2824ac0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">collisions with ships<\/a> and climate change. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Seven out of the 14 great whale species are classified as endangered or vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, including the critically endangered <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/right-whales-fishing-seafood-lobster-f84bc73f061ced0fffbef408caf947d8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">North Atlantic right whales<\/a>, which number only around 380 now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Vermeulen also raised a new threat for whales around South Africa: the conflict in the Middle East. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">She said a recent preliminary assessment she co-authored showed that shipping around the southern point of Africa had quadrupled since December 2023 \u2014 after the Israel-Hamas war broke out and <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/yemen-saudi-houthis-attack-shipping-red-sea-iran-6ee98d611669dc84953d2f2e15958bf9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Yemen&#8217;s Houthi rebels<\/a> began attacking ships in the Red Sea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">That is being made worse by <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/iran\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Iran war<\/a> and the security crisis over the Strait of Hormuz, diverting more ships around Africa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Because most whales killed by ships sink in the ocean there are no detailed statistics.
