Oscar award-winning actor\u00a0Javier Bardem\u00a0is facing backlash over comments he made<\/a> during the 98th\u00a0Academy Awards on Sunday when he presented the Best International Feature award.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo to war and Free Palestine,\u201d Bardem said before announcing the winner<\/a> while wearing a \u201cNo a la Guerra\u201d (No to War) pin \u2014 a symbol he previously wore to oppose the U.S.\u2019s \u201cillegal war\u201d against Iraq.<\/p>\n

Critics quickly slammed the actor for what they described as anti-Israel stances.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s no secret that Javier Bardem has spent years vilifying Israel on the world stage,\u201d one user wrote on X.<\/p>\n

Some even questioned why he was on stage.<\/p>\n

While Bardem was not directly nominated for an Oscar, his movie \u2014 the Formula One racing drama\u00a0\u201cF1,\u201d directed by\u00a0Joseph Kosinski\u00a0\u2014 was up for awards. The film, an\u00a0Apple\u00a0Original starring\u00a0Brad Pitt, received four nominations at the 98th Academy Awards, winning Best Sound. It was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Editing, and Best Visual Effects, marking a major showing for the racing film.<\/p>\n

Bardem said the pin was the same \u201cNo a la Guerra\u201d badge he wore in 2003, linking his past anti-war activism to current events. In September 2025, he also used the\u00a0Primetime Emmy Awards\u00a0to spotlight the situation in Gaza, CNN reported. In February 2026, he joined more than 80 others in signing an open letter urging the\u00a0Berlin International Film Festival to condemn Israel\u2019s actions.<\/p>\n

Critics said Bardem was not the only one to blame, but also the\u00a0Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences\u00a0itself.<\/p>\n

\u201cBardem\u2019s record is ugly, but the most reprehensible actor here is @TheAcademy itself, which decided that this is the moment to hand him a microphone and a global platform,\u201d Ettus said.<\/p>\n
