Maybe we\u2019ll become the guardian angel of the strait, and we should be reimbursed for that,\u201d Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/07\/13\/us-news\/trump-predicts-us-will-become-guardian-angel-of-strait-of-hormuz-passage\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">added in the TV appearance<\/a>, which came via phone.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we do that, we\u2019re going to be reimbursed because the other nations are very wealthy, they\u2019re on our side, and we can\u2019t be expected to do that for nothing, unlike we had for many years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The two weeks since have led to a standoff, including daily strikes by the U.S., followed by a pause that has lasted through last weekend.\n<\/p>\n<p>But now, Iran is insisting that it continue to control the Strait of Hormuz.\n<\/p>\n<p>Still \u201cin Control\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/iran-says-it-still-controls-strait-not-seeking-talks-after-trump-halts-bombing-2026-07-27\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Reuters reported Monday<\/a> that Iran has indicated it still controls the <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalsecurityjournal.org\/donald-trump-lost-the-strait-of-hormuz-to-iran-and-cant-bomb-his-way-to-victory\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Strait of Hormuz<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIran has said it will pause its own attacks for as long as Trump\u2019s self-imposed ceasefire continues,\u201d the report said. \u201cBut it also said it was still in control of the contested Strait of Hormuz, and was not seeking to resume peace talks with the United States.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4434\" class=\"wp-image-4434\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/F-16-Fighter-and-B-1B-Lancer-Bomber.jpg\" alt=\"U.S. Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons intercept two U.S. Air Force B-1B Lancers during exercise Amalgam Dart 21-2, March 23, 2021. (U.S. Air National Guard courtesy photo)<\/p>\n<p>That report added that\u00a0 Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Iraq all reported drone attacks over the weekend, although the source of those attacks has not been confirmed.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs previously announced, the traffic route in the Strait of Hormuz is the route specified by Iran, and other routes are contaminated and have no way out,\u201d a source told state media outlets in Iran, per Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday, <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/defense\/5989979-iran-us-strikes-quiet-night\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">per The Hill,<\/a> was the first night in two weeks in which the U.S. and Iran did not <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalsecurityjournal.org\/donald-trump-is-in-crisis-his-iran-war-failed-iran-controls-hormuz-and-the-us-military-is-running-low-on-stockpiles-of-weapons\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">exchange fire<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>Why the Pause?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to the Reuters story, the pause in air strikes was a move that \u201creflected advice from his military that the bombing had reached the limits of what it could achieve.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Dan Caine, \u201chad expressed concern over the depletion of air defense munitions.\u201d Mike Waltz, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, said over the weekend that the purpose of the pause was to allow for negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/07\/25\/us\/politics\/trump-iran-military.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the New York Times provided <\/a>some analysis as to why the American military campaign was on <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalsecurityjournal.org\/when-the-oil-tankers-might-go-boom-the-strait-of-hormuz-crisis-isnt-over-just-yet\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hold<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Trump has set aside, at least for now, plans to sharply escalate the American military assault against Iran, with particular concern that intensifying the war could dangerously drain the Pentagon\u2019s already diminished stockpile of Patriot antimissile interceptors and other air defense munitions in the Middle East,\u201d the Times reported.\n<\/p>\n<p>The analysis added that Trump and his team are also \u201cuneasy about the prospect of a widening war in the Middle East, the alienation of key Gulf allies who are vulnerable to Iranian attack, a global economic crunch, and growing energy and refugee crises.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>Gen. Caine \u201ccautioned privately\u201d that resuming combat operations was \u201cdoable but that it would dangerously deplete interceptors available\u201d to Central Command.\n<\/p>\n<p>Steven Cheung, the White House communications director, told the Times that the White House has \u201calways been consistent in saying he prefers a diplomatic solution, but he continues to retain all options if Iran continues terrorist activities in the Strait of Hormuz or against allies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would be wise for Iran to work towards a negotiated deal; otherwise, they know what will happen,\u201d Cheung added.\n<\/p>\n<p>Going For Pickaxe Mountain?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A week ago, Trump was making noises about <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/article\/2026\/07\/24\/iran-pickaxe-mountain-underground-nuclear-site-trump-threat-strikes\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">attacking Pickaxe Mountain<\/a>, a facility in Iran that is said to hold some of its nuclear materials. Israel had intelligence that Iran had moved nuclear centrifuges to that location, the Wall Street Journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/world\/middle-east\/israel-believes-iran-moved-nuclear-centrifuges-into-pickaxe-mountain-d29d21c0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported last week.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll be hitting that area very probably pretty soon.
