We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Your support makes all the difference.Read more<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/boy-george\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Boy George<\/a> has been met with a fierce backlash after releasing a pro-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/israel\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Israel <\/a>song that defends <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/middle-east\/gaza-yellowline-israel-zeitoun-war-b3022866.html\">the country\u2019s military action<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/palestine\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Palestine<\/a> and refutes that <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/middle-east\/israel-genocide-gaza-united-nations-b2826985.html\">a genocide<\/a> is being carried out in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/gaza\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gaza<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Posted to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/music\/news\/boy-george-chappell-roan-paparazzi-paris-video-b2936378.html\">the singer\u2019s<\/a> social media accounts this week with the Hebrew title, \u05e2\u05d5\u05d3 \u05e0\u05e8\u05e7\u05d5\u05d3, along with its English translation, \u201cWe Will Dance Again\u201d, the song features the opening lyrics: \u201cYou say genocide, I say war\/ When you\u2019re attacked, that\u2019s what the army\u2019s for\/ Does it get ugly? You bet it does\/ When I know you wanna kill every last one of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The phrase \u201cWe Will Dance Again\u201d, which <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/music\/features\/boy-george-culture-club-b2658763.html\">Boy George,<\/a> 65, sings on the chorus, has been used by Israelis to express hope in the wake of the 7 October music festival attack by Hamas. <\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere on the track, which is set to a reggae-pop beat, Boy George criticises the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/music\/news\/paul-weller-palestine-gaza-israel-genocide-b2551710.html\">pro-Palestine movement,<\/a> including<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/music\/news\/kneecap-palestine-music-alliance-massive-attack-b2791638.html\"> musicians who have condemned Israel for its actions:<\/a> \u201cYou condemn, with selective memory\/ Musicians holding flags, mouthing like sheep\/ Propaganda fuelled by the internet feels so weak.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The track does not appear to be available on streaming platforms.<\/p>\n<p>Last September, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/middle-east\/israel-genocide-gaza-united-nations-b2826985.html\">a two-year United Nations investigation found that Israel has committed genocide in Gaza,<\/a> citing the bombardment that has killed over 73,000 Palestinians since the war started, the forced displacement of most of the two-million strong population, the destruction of the healthcare system as well as the blocking of essential food, water, aid and electricity that has led to famine. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/2287293294...jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Displaced Palestinians hold empty pots and containers to receive food supplies in Gaza City, Gaza Strip, on July 27, 2026. Widespread displacement and the ongoing conflict have severely disrupted access to essential resources, leaving many families reliant on communal relief efforts for their daily meals (AFP\/Getty)<\/p>\n<p>The commission also referred to the \u201cuse of starvation as a weapon\u201d along with the torture, rape and sexual assault of Palestinian detainees, and environmental destruction. <\/p>\n<p>Israel\u2019s foreign ministry called the UN report \u201cdistorted and false\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>Last month, another independent UN inquiry found that Israel was continuing to commit genocide by targeting children, a report branded a \u201clibellous sham\u201d by Israel. <\/p>\n<p>Boy George\u2019s song marks a step up in his vocal support for Israel, after he said earlier this year that he did not have an opinion on the country. <\/p>\n<p>Speaking ahead of his performance with San Marino for their 2026 Eurovision Song Contest entry last May, he was questioned about the boycott by countries including Spain, Iceland and the Netherlands over Israel\u2019s continued inclusion. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/2272113047...jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Boy George performing in the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>Boy George performing in the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest (Getty)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have many Jewish friends, whom I\u2019ve known since I was 15 or 16 years old,\u201d he responded. \u201cAre people asking me, as someone with principles, to turn my back on my Jewish friends? That is not going to happen \u2013 it will never happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Boy George, who is not Jewish, said he has worn the Star of David \u201cfrom the beginning of my career\u201d and that he felt \u201cvery connected to the Jewish people\u201d. He added: \u201cI\u2019m not necessarily connected to Israel. I don\u2019t really have an opinion on that. But the mission of music is to unite people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/fashion\/people\/boy-george-id-never-turn-my-back-on-my-jewish-friends\/\">The Telegraph, <\/a>he reaffirmed his support for his Jewish peers: \u201cOver the years it\u2019s become a really personal thing. It doesn\u2019t mean that I don\u2019t have compassion for Palestinians, it doesn\u2019t mean that I agree with what&#8217;s going on in Israel, but I am always going to defend the people that I love.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His song has been met with fierce condemnation from many on social media.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/2270517029...jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Boy George was told he should be \u2018ashamed\u2019 for his pro-Israel song\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>Boy George was told he should be \u2018ashamed\u2019 for his pro-Israel song (AFP\/Getty)<\/p>\n<p>Martyn Ware, the founder of pop bands the Human League and Heaven 17 and a former friend of Boy George, called the song an \u201covertly pro-genocide, anti-Palestinian piece of musical propaganda\u2026\u201d He wrote: \u201cGeorge, you should be ashamed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Boy George\u2019s fellow pro-Israel supporters thanked him for the song, with one claiming it brought \u201ctears to my eyes\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>The Independent has contacted Boy George\u2019s representative for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Boy George became known as the colourful frontman of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/culture-club\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Culture Club<\/a> in the Eighties, releasing hit songs such as \u201cKarma Chameleon\u201d and \u201cDo You Really Want to Hurt Me\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>In 2008, he was sentenced to 15 months in prison for assault and false imprisonment after he \u201cchained\u201d then-26-year-old Audun Carlsen to a wall. He pleaded not guilty at the time. <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile in 2022, he took part in the ITV reality contest I\u2019m a Celebrity\u2026 Get Me Out of Here! In which he was accused of purposely causing tension in the camp.
