July 28 (Reuters) – Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said on Tuesday he called his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araqchi, following Iran’s \u200cdenunciation of a Ukrainian drone attack on one of its \u200cships, warned him against escalation and told him to end all support for Russia.<\/p>\n
“I \u200bemphasised the necessity to refrain from any escalatory steps, as well as to end any support for Russia’s war against Ukraine. This war is illegal and it must end,” Sybiha wrote on X of his \u200cconversation with Araqchi.<\/p>\n
Araqchi confirmed \u2060on X that he had been assured by Sybiha that the attack on the Iranian ship was unintentional \u2060and that Kyiv did not seek escalation.<\/p>\n
“Iran does not seek escalation either, but made clear any attack on our citizens or interests is unacceptable. \u200bThere must \u200bbe restitution for losses,” Araqchi \u200bsaid.<\/p>\n
Araqchi had said on Sunday \u200cthat the Ukrainian attack on the Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea, which killed one sailor and injured another, could not go unanswered.<\/p>\n
Sybiha said Ukraine’s actions were “aimed solely at defending our country from Russian aggression and never intended to target civilian vessels or people”.<\/p>\n
In more \u200cthan four years of conflict with \u200bRussia, Ukraine has faced barrages of Iranian-designed \u200bdrones.<\/p>\n
Kyiv has, over that time, \u200bdeveloped technology to counter drone threats and has \u200coffered its assistance to Middle Eastern \u200bcountries facing strikes \u200blaunched this year by Tehran.<\/p>\n
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, meanwhile, wrote on X that he had spoken to Sybiha and “discussed the \u200bchallenges facing our nations, \u200cincluding the threat posed by Iran.”<\/p>\n
He said he looked forward \u200bto deepening cooperation with Ukraine.<\/p>\n
