The US has said it had carried out “a heavy wave of strikes against Iran” in response to Tehran’s attempted attack on American military positions in Jordan.<\/p>\n

US Central Command said in a social media post that it had struck “dozens” of targets belonging to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps over two hours early on Thursday.<\/p>\n

The targets included military command centres, missile and drone facilities, and coastal surveillance and defence sites.<\/p>\n

The latest strikes came after the US joined Saudi Arabia<\/a> in attacking Iran-backed militias in neighbouring Iraq, killing at least 20 fighters and six Iranian advisers.<\/p>\n

The operation followed a pledge by US President Donald Trump on Wednesday to hit Iran “very hard” after it targeted a military base in Jordan hosting American troops.<\/p>\n

Iranian state media said two people were injured in attacks on the island of Qeshm in the Strait of Hormuz, while explosions were also reported in Khuzestan province in the country’s southwest.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, drone strikes set fire to two natural gas vessels at Egypt’s Port of Damietta, according to British maritime security firm Ambrey.<\/p>\n

It was not immediately clear who was responsible for the attacks on a US-owned floating storage facility and a Greek-owned tanker. No injuries were reported.<\/p>\n

The latest flare-ups on multiple fronts after several days of relative calm have raised fears of a return to all-out war.<\/p>\n

They also highlight the difficulty of bringing an end to the five-month conflict, which has shaken the global economy.<\/p>\n

The renewed fighting is also likely to fuel concerns that the US is further depleting its already diminished stockpiles of advanced munitions needed to defend its military bases and allies.<\/p>\n

Egypt, a key US ally and regional mediator, is one of the few countries in the Middle East to have avoided direct military action during the conflict.<\/p>\n

Any confirmed strike by Iran or its allies on Egyptian territory would mark a significant escalation and broadening of the war.<\/p>\n

Asked during an Oval Office event if Iran was responsible for the strikes on the natural gas vessels, Trump responded: “It’s a little more of the same.”<\/p>\n

“In the meantime, we’re going to be hitting them very hard because it’s our turn to hit them,” he added.<\/p>\n

Saudi Arabia accused Iran-backed militias in Iraq of launching drone attacks on its oil facilities over the past two days.<\/p>\n

An umbrella group representing the Iraqi militias denied the allegations, while Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels said they had separately targeted Saudi energy facilities as part of a related conflict.<\/p>\n

US officials said Saudi Arabia’s decision to join American strikes on the Iraqi militias was intended to send a message to Iran that it would not tolerate attacks by Tehran or its proxies on the kingdom’s oil industry and other critical infrastructure.<\/p>\n

At the same time, Saudi Arabia’s defence minister told Trump and Vice President JD Vance that Riyadh wanted to see the conflict de-escalate and for Washington and Tehran to return to negotiations.<\/p>\n

Before the latest escalation, mediators had expressed optimism about bringing the US and Iran back to the negotiating table.<\/p>\n

However, an interim agreement collapsed in recent weeks after renewed fighting in the Strait of Hormuz, the vital shipping route for global energy supplies that has again been effectively closed by Iranian attacks.<\/p>\n

A regional official said mediators were “still trying with both sides” to restore calm and revive the ceasefire, but did not indicate whether progress had been made.<\/p>\n

The renewed hostilities sent oil prices sharply higher, with Brent crude, the international benchmark, rising 7.3% to $88.09 (about \u00a366) a barrel.<\/p>\n
