{"id":231192,"date":"2026-08-01T01:43:19","date_gmt":"2026-08-01T01:43:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/231192\/"},"modified":"2026-08-01T01:43:19","modified_gmt":"2026-08-01T01:43:19","slug":"columbia-university-to-open-tel-aviv-center-students-drop-divestment-demand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/231192\/","title":{"rendered":"Columbia University to open Tel Aviv center, students drop divestment demand"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/diaspora\/antisemitism\/article-879933\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Columbia University<\/a> will open its global center in Tel Aviv this summer, adjunct professor Nadav Eyal announced Monday on the \u201cCall Me Back\u201d podcast with Dan Senor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">The center was first announced by the school in April 2023 and quickly drew dueling letters from faculty supporting and opposing the move.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter what we saw on university campuses across the US, including, of course, at Columbia University, got a lot of traction in media and our criticism, it\u2019s really nice to know that this is opening,\u201d Eyal said, referring to campus pro-Palestinian protests that some said crossed into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/diaspora\/antisemitism\/article-904160\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">antisemitism<\/a> and intimidation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">The Columbia student workers&#8217; union dropped its demand at the bargaining table Tuesday for the university to divest from Israel.<\/p>\n<p>The concession by the Student Workers of Columbia-United Auto Workers marked a sharp reversal for the group, which played a key role in the pro-Palestinian protest movement that roiled the campus during the war in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/middle-east\/article-904113\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gaza<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"People attend a vigil and protest for Palestine outside of Columbia University on October 7, 2025 in New York City.\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"632\" height=\"492\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/images.jpost.com\/image\/upload\/f_auto,fl_lossy\/c_fill,g_faces:center,h_537,w_822\/732273\"\/>People attend a vigil and protest for Palestine outside of Columbia University on October 7, 2025 in New York City. (credit: Adam Gray\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">\u201cYou start off a campaign with one thing, and then as you bargain, you have to face the realities of where you are,\u201d union president Grant Miner told the Columbia Spectator.<\/p>\n<p>End Jew Hatred, an antisemitism advocacy group founded by pro-Israel conservative activists in 2020, has launched a petition calling on New York Gov. Kathy Hochul to remove Mayor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/diaspora\/antisemitism\/article-904156\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zohran Mamdani<\/a> from office.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani petition follows Upper West Side stabbing attack<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">The petition comes one week after several New York Jewish leaders condemned the mayor\u2019s rhetoric following a stabbing attack that left two men wounded on the Upper West Side, including a Jewish man.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">\u201cMayor Mamdani has been made acutely aware of the public safety concerns of the Jewish community, including those about his own rhetoric,\u201d the petition reads. \u201cHe has failed to act, failed to lower the temperature, and failed to adequately govern New Yorkers.
