{"id":23141,"date":"2026-03-17T10:04:12","date_gmt":"2026-03-17T10:04:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/23141\/"},"modified":"2026-03-17T10:04:12","modified_gmt":"2026-03-17T10:04:12","slug":"israels-invasion-of-lebanon-is-pushing-a-fragile-nation-to-its-tipping-point","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/23141\/","title":{"rendered":"Israel&#8217;s invasion of Lebanon is pushing a fragile nation to its &#8216;tipping point&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Israel&#8217;s rapidly expanding invasion of Lebanon will destabilise a country that is already on the brink of collapse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;This war can really be the tipping point,&#8221; said Sami Nader, director of the Institute of Political Science at Beirut&#8217;s Saint Joseph University.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;That&#8217;s something that is threatening the very existence of this country.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">One possible outcome of the invasion is the kind of power vacuum that led to the nation&#8217;s 15-year civil war in the 1970s and 1980s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Almost one million people have been displaced as Israel bombs southern Beirut and pushes troops into southern Lebanon, in its campaign against the Iran-backed militia, Hezbollah.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman standing next to a tent along a roadside by the sea with a young child. \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/bfaa319ebec5f74b70e592215f97f5c7.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Almost one million people have already been displaced in Lebanon.\u00a0 (Reuters: Khalil Ashawi)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Since 2020, Lebanon has been battling a series of crises: COVID, an economic collapse, hyper-inflation, an explosion at the city&#8217;s port that devastated a large part of Beirut, and, since October 7, 2023, conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I think what basically the Israeli operation is doing is weakening the position of the Lebanese government further,&#8221; says Amin Saikal, a Middle East analyst who works with several Australian universities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If there is a collapse of the government, I think the grounds will be ripened for another round of civil war that&#8217;s not going to benefit anyone.&#8221;The risk for Israel\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Lebanese civil war, fought from 1974 to 1989, was notable for the destruction of much of Beirut, the massacre of civilians, an explosion of international terrorism and the 1982 Israeli invasion and long occupation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Israel has done it before &#8230; in 1982 and then again in 2006,&#8221; Professor Saikal said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;And in the past, they have not been terribly successful. But this time, it looks like Israel is determined to remain in occupation of southern Lebanon.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"israel tanks\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/e1183fe124c2490cfee8a5c11ba730ba.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">As well as bombing Beirut, the Israeli military is now pushing into southern Lebanon.\u00a0 (Reuters: Shir Torem)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Under the terms of a 2024 ceasefire, Lebanese authorities promised to disarm Hezbollah, which has strong support amongst Shia Muslims and is arguably more powerful than the Lebanese state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The nation&#8217;s new prime minister, Nawaf Salam, had taken the rare and risky step of actually criticising Hezbollah in early March.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;This is unprecedented,&#8221; said Mr Nader. &#8220;However, the implementation does not match the talk.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam seated at a desk with the Lebanese flag behind him, speaking to journalists.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/8aba5f6549ca0f0fead8bb8341d14077.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Nawaf Salam was elected as Lebanese Prime Minister last year. (\u00a0Reuters: Mohamed Azakir)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Hezbollah began firing missiles at Israel after the assassination of Iran&#8217;s Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on February 28. Israel launched air strikes immediately, and the fighting has not stopped.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;This window of opportunity for the Lebanese government to assert its own control has vanished,&#8221; Mr Nader said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Now Israel is trying to dismantle Hezbollah through its own means.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Israeli media are reporting that ground troops are pushing further into southern Lebanon, and two more divisions have been moved to the northern border in preparation for expanded operations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Former Israeli diplomat and political advisor Alon Pinkas says Israel does not want a long occupation.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Soldiers sitting in three military vehicles along a road. \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/54a96603a21d19ab02a2ca07b907b404.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">A long occupation of Lebanon would not be in Israel&#8217;s interests, says former Israeli diplomat Alon Pinkas.\u00a0 (Reuters: Avi Ohayon)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said that an ongoing Israeli military presence in southern Lebanon carries risk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Hezbollah are entrenched in Beirut, which is up north, and they hold most of their missile arsenals, silos and launchers in the north-east of Lebanon in the Bekaa Valley,&#8221; he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So an Israeli military operation in the south of Lebanon would achieve nothing other than turn Israeli soldiers into sitting ducks.&#8221;Displaced with nowhere to go\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In Beirut, parts of the city have become encampments for refugees from the city&#8217;s south. Hundreds of tents have been erected along the city&#8217;s celebrated Corniche and on reclaimed land near the city&#8217;s port.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Aid worker Basma Alloush said many of the city&#8217;s schools have become shelters for displaced families.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She said 830,000 displaced people have registered with authorities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;About 130,000 of those have managed to find shelters,&#8221; Ms Alloush told 7.30.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Otherwise, we&#8217;re hearing of families that have made other kinds of makeshift arrangements that are either staying with relatives or friends.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">There&#8217;s a huge amount of people that are just displaced on the streets.
