President Trump’s announcement of a “historic” deal reached with negotiators this week that includes disarming<\/a> Hamas still faces hurdles, as skeptics<\/a> wonder if it can move from paper to reality.<\/p>\n

The agreement is part of Trump’s 20-point plan<\/a> to reach a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and bring an end to the war between Israel and Hamas, with Trump’s approval ratings dipping to its lowest<\/a> point in his second term over his handling of the war.<\/p>\n

The plan calls for the complete disarmament of Hamas and other armed groups in Gaza. In return, Israeli forces would then withdraw in stages, while an International Stabilization Force would take over security and work alongside a newly created Palestinian police force.<\/p>\n

Hamas on Friday said it had agreed to the road map, but added that “the ball is now in the enemy’s court,” referring to Israel. Senior Hamas official Bassem Naim said that as Hamas begins to carry out its commitments under the agreement, mediators must “compel” Israel to do the same.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not publicly commented on the road map. Reports say anonymous Israeli officials will not withdraw its military from the “yellow line” created during last year’s peace talks until Hamas truly disarms itself.<\/p>\n

Experts have warned that implementing the deal could prove difficult, as there is no trust between the two sides and both are signalling for the other to move first.<\/p>\n

On the domestic front, the path to confirm interim Attorney General Todd Blanche was met with even more hurdles after two GOP senators \u2014 John Cornyn (Texas) and Thom Tillis (N.C.) \u2014 held out on their votes over a dispute about the Justice Department’s $1.779 billion anti-weaponization fund.<\/p>\n

The senators wanted assurance that the funds for potential “victims” of weaponization by the DOJ could not be revived.<\/p>\n

A Senate Judiciary Committee vote on Blanche was then canceled<\/a> late Wednesday by Chair Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), who said the panel would not vote as “work continues to secure sufficient support.”<\/p>\n

“Senators Cornyn and Tillis want written assurances from the Department of Justice regarding the Trump-IRS settlement,” a spokesperson for Grassley said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Trump floated<\/a> the idea of withdrawing his nomination of Blanche and allow him to serve as interim for a few more months before resubmitting his nomination when Cornyn and Tillis leave Congress. Cornyn lost the GOP primary to Trump-backed challenger Ken Paxton, while Tillis announced his retirement.<\/p>\n

“Todd Blanche is a STAR, and everyone knows it! He has the potential to go down as one of the Greatest Attorney Generals of All Time,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Thursday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“However, John Cornyn, of Texas, and Thom Tillis, of North Carolina, both of whom I refused to Endorse, and whose political careers have been ended by my action, are refusing to vote for this Great Nominee, who will remain, in any event, as Acting,” Trump continued.<\/p>\n

The Justice Department also came under fire by Trump after dropping<\/a> its Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool vandalism case against former Olympian David Hearn. It dismissed the felony charge against Hearn after finding<\/a> that the damage to the pool liner was caused by a “rushed and botched installation,” and not alleged vandalism.<\/p>\n

Trump took to social media to share his disagreements with the decision and to call out<\/a> U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro.<\/p>\n

“I disagree 100% with Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, on the Reflecting Pool,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social. “I don’t know what she was thinking? To me, it was a pure case of VANDALISM.”<\/p>\n

On Capitol Hill, former White House chief medical adviser Anthony Fauci testified<\/a> before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee this week, where he invoked his Fifth Amendment right 111 times.<\/p>\n

Fauci faced ridicule from GOP senators over the government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, days after Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) released more than 1,000 pages<\/a> of entries from Fauci’s private diary.<\/p>\n
