{"id":232738,"date":"2026-08-02T14:32:16","date_gmt":"2026-08-02T14:32:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/232738\/"},"modified":"2026-08-02T14:32:16","modified_gmt":"2026-08-02T14:32:16","slug":"iran-denies-it-asked-trump-not-to-strike-or-agreed-to-deal-to-split-control-of-hormuz","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/232738\/","title":{"rendered":"Iran denies it asked Trump not to strike or agreed to deal to split control of Hormuz"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Iranian semi-official news agencies on Sunday denied US President Donald Trump\u2019s claim <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/trump-says-he-and-israel-have-called-off-iran-attack-after-being-assured-deal-is-imminent\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hours earlier<\/a> that Tehran had asked the US to hold off on any attack, and also negated reports that it had agreed to a deal that would divide control of the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n<p>Iran\u2019s Mehr news agency on Sunday denied the claim by Trump \u2014 made as he announced that he had called off strikes since \u201cthe perimeters of a deal has been agreed to\u201d \u2014 that the Islamic Republic asked the United States to refrain from conducting new strikes.<\/p>\n<p>Citing military officials, the agency said the allegation \u201cwas nothing but a new lie\u201d and that the Iranian armed forces were \u201con high alert and ready for any eventuality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other Iranian media outlets mocked Trump for the climbdown, with Kayhan saying he \u201cbacked away from his positions once again, after about a week of boasting and threats against Iran, claiming that an agreement was close.\u201d Echoed semi-official media outlet Mehr: \u201cTrump once again backed away from his hollow threats and presented his retreat to the world as a favor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Israel\u2019s Channel 12 news reported Sunday that Trump called off the strikes after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi agreed to a compromise deal on opening up the Strait of Hormuz. According to the report, based on two diplomats familiar with the situation, a compromise deal put together by Qatar and the US would see ships enter the Persian Gulf on the Iranian-controlled side of the strait and exit via the Omani side.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tGet The Times of Israel&#8217;s Daily Edition<br \/>\n\t\t\tby email and never miss our top stories\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tBy signing up, you agree to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/terms\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">terms<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Oman agreed to the deal but sought assurances that the agreement would be respected by Iran\u2019s hardline Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which the Qataris are attempting to secure, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p>The report made no mention of fees for transiting the strait, which has been a major sticking point.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2026\/06\/AP26179328845342-e1782638607302.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3851326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/AP26179328845342-e1782638607302-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n\t\tIranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi speaks during a news conference with his Iraqi counterpart Fouad Hussein after their meeting at the foreign ministry in Baghdad, Iraq, June 28, 2026. (AP\/ Hadi Mizban)<\/p>\n<p>But Iran\u2019s semi-official Fars news agency on Sunday quoted a member of the country\u2019s negotiating team saying that the Israeli media report was \u201cfalse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fars also quoted the official as saying that \u201cas long as the United States maintains its hostile actions, the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed\u201d to any ship that does not coordinate with Iran\u2019s Revolutionary Guards.<\/p>\n<p>The hardline body is seen as a significant obstacle to reaching a deal and there are questions regarding how much it is aligned with Iranian diplomats trying to negotiate with the US.<\/p>\n<p>Iran has blockaded Hormuz since the start of the war, requiring vessels to obtain permission and pay transit fees before using the waterway.<\/p>\n<p>Deterrence<\/p>\n<p>While there was no official Israeli reaction,\u00a0Energy Minister Eli Cohen said Sunday that there was close security and intelligence coordination between Israel and the US on everything happening in the region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith or without an agreement, and regardless of any external commitments, if Iran attempts to renew its nuclear program or advance its ballistic missile industries, we will be there. We will take action, and we will strike,\u201d he told Army Radio.<\/p>\n<p>While Trump\u2019s announcement touted a deal on Hormuz, it did not mention Iran\u2019s nuclear or missile programs, the destruction of which, were key aims when Israel and the US launched the war.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2026\/06\/F260218YS21.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3844630\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/F260218YS21-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n\t\tEnergy Minister Eli Cohen speaks during an Economic Committee meeting at the Knesset in Jerusalem, on February 18, 2026. (Yonatan Sindel\/Flash90)<\/p>\n<p>Cohen also claimed that Iran feared an Israeli reaction and so had refrained from striking Israel, while it had hit most other countries in the region that hosted US forces.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIran held off on attacking us, because they are deterred, something that highlights Israel\u2019s standing in the Middle East,\u201d Cohen said. \u201cThe attacked all the other nations in the region except for Israel. It speaks for itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Iran also claimed that it has deterred the US and Israel from renewing strikes.<\/p>\n<p>Iran\u2019s acting defense minister, Brigadier General Majid Ebn Al-Reza, said Tehran viewed recent US threats as \u201cpsychological and cognitive warfare\u201d but was treating them seriously, adding that Iran would boost preparedness and deterrence rather than be caught off guard or remain passive, Press TV reported.<\/p>\n<p>Saudi influence<\/p>\n<p>Trump announced a halt to what had been touted as an imminent major attack on Iran after speaking via phone with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>In his call with Trump, the Saudi crown prince, widely known as MBS, stressed the \u201cnecessity of prioritizing dialogue to deescalate tensions\u201d in the Middle East, \u201cand the importance of exerting all possible efforts to achieve a truce that paves the way for diplomatic solutions,\u201d according to a Sunday statement from Saudi Arabia\u2019s state news agency.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2025\/11\/AP25322652461136.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3692737\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP25322652461136-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n\t\tPresident Donald Trump meets Saudi Arabia\u2019s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in the Oval Office of the White House, November 18, 2025, in Washington. (AP Photo\/Evan Vucci)<\/p>\n<p>A White House official told Reuters that the two leaders had spoken but did not provide details.<\/p>\n<p>Iranian state media said the Saudi and Iranian foreign ministers also held a call and that Tehran also spoke with Pakistan and Turkey, which have acted as mediators in the talks, about \u201cthe risk of escalating tensions and insecurity in the region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s apparent deescalation after days of threats of new attacks from each side marked the latest turn in the war the US and Israel launched five months ago. Attacks have spread across the Gulf to the Red Sea and even a Mediterranean facility in Egypt.<\/p>\n<p>The risk of Iranian attacks has deterred most shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, an important conduit for global energy supplies, since the start of the conflict, sending shockwaves through the world economy.<\/p>\n<p>US embassies in capitals across the Middle East had warned their citizens on Saturday to beware of \u201cunforeseen escalation\u201d in the regional conflict and urged them to be ready to leave, hours before Trump\u2019s announcement appeared to calm tensions.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\tWe can&#8217;t do this work alone.\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"200\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Untitled-design-4-200x200.jpg\" class=\"attachment-square size-square wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\"\/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>The war with Iran has been draining for all of us in Israel.
