WASHINGTON \u2014<\/p>\nPresident Donald Trump called off a planned weekend attack on Iran, and on Monday, offered what he described as a \u201clast chance\u201d for negotiations.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want to give them every last chance before decapitation,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n
Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump insisted talks were underway and outlined a potential deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz as early as Tuesday. The president said negotiations would follow on what he referred to as the \u201cdenuclearization of Iran,\u201d which he noted would \u201ctake a while.\u201d<\/p>\n
The president said he held off on military strikes, which he described as \u201cthe biggest attack since World War II,\u201d after Gulf allies and Iranian officials urged him to give diplomacy another opportunity.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was going to come last night, and it would have gone on for a long time, and there\u2019d be essentially very little left. There\u2019d be nothing left. And, if I\u2019m given a chance to let a lot of people live, I want to give that chance,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n
On Monday, Iran\u2019s Foreign Ministry denied negotiating with the U.S. Tehran claimed that the country\u2019s only current discussions are with Oman regarding a \u201ctemporary\u201d safe route for ships through the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n
In a social media post, Trump accused Iran\u2019s leaders of being \u201cunbelievably duplicitous,\u201d claiming they privately requested talks while publicly denying they were happening.<\/p>\n
This is not the first time Trump has threatened a major attack on Iran, then held off to allow more time for diplomacy.<\/p>\n
