Pakistan has intensified its diplomatic outreach to Iran, with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar inviting Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to visit Islamabad “at the earliest” for high-level talks, in what officials describe as an effort to preserve Pakistan’s role in efforts to ease tensions between Tehran and Washington.<\/p>\n
The invitation comes at a sensitive moment for regional diplomacy, just days after US President Donald Trump halted planned military strikes against Iran following appeals from key Gulf allies to allow negotiations more time.<\/p>\n
Iran has not yet publicly responded to Dar’s invitation, reported PTI.<\/p>\n
According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office, Dar held a telephone conversation with Araghchi on Monday during which the two leaders discussed developments across the region and beyond.<\/p>\n
“Deputy Prime Minister\/Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar @MIshaqDar50 spoke today with the Foreign Minister of Iran, Seyyed Abbas Araghchi. They exchanged views on regional and international developments, including the deteriorating situation in Occupied East Jerusalem,\u201d the Pakistan Foreign Office said in a post on X on Monday.<\/p>\n
It further said, \u201cDPM\/FM (Dar) invited Foreign Minister Araghchi to visit Pakistan at his earliest convenience.”<\/p>\n
In a parallel diplomatic move, Pakistan National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq has also reportedly invited his Iranian counterpart, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, to Islamabad.<\/p>\n

Senior Pakistani officials said the outreach reflects Islamabad’s continued efforts to position itself as a key diplomatic facilitator at a time when negotiations between the US and Iran remain uncertain.<\/p>\n
“Through the latest outreach, Pakistan is seeking to reinforce its position as a trusted intermediary at a time when diplomatic efforts remain fragile and the prospect of another military confrontation continues to loom over the Gulf,” PTI quoted a senior Pakistani government official as saying on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Araghchi and Ghalibaf were both closely involved in the latest round of indirect negotiations between Washington and Tehran.<\/p>\n
The official said Pakistan was intentionally maintaining a “relatively low profile” while continuing diplomatic engagement behind closed doors.<\/p>\n
He added, “Let me tell you… diplomatic engagement has continued behind the scenes.\u201d<\/p>\n
Pakistan has remained involved in diplomatic efforts since June, when the US and Iran signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at reducing tensions in West Asia. Islamabad signed the agreement as a “guarantor” and had earlier hosted peace talks in April before participating as a mediator in subsequent technical-level discussions held in Switzerland shortly after the MoU was signed.<\/p>\n
However, the diplomatic process broke down in early July after both sides accused each other of violating the agreement. The collapse was followed by renewed military strikes and disagreements over the Strait of Hormuz, the strategic Gulf waterway that normally handles nearly one-fifth of global energy shipments.<\/p>\n
Pakistan’s latest initiative also comes amid conflicting claims from Washington and Tehran over the status of negotiations.<\/p>\n
On Monday, Trump accused Iran’s leadership of being “unbelievably duplicitous” after Tehran rejected his assertion that negotiations were underway.<\/p>\n
While the US President maintained that talks with Iran were continuing, Iranian officials insisted that no negotiations with Washington were currently taking place or scheduled.<\/p>\n
A day earlier, Trump revealed that he had suspended planned military action against Iran after Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, along with the leaders of Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, appealed for more time to pursue diplomacy. Although Trump did not mention Pakistan among the mediators, Tehran has continued to publicly recognise Islamabad’s role.<\/p>\n
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghei said on Monday that Pakistan remained “the mediator in the discussions related to Iran and the US”, while Qatar was facilitating the process whenever necessary.<\/p>\n
“To say that we have added a new mediator to the existing mediators is not, in the strict sense of the word, the case,” he added.<\/p>\n
