{"id":235890,"date":"2026-08-04T18:14:17","date_gmt":"2026-08-04T18:14:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/235890\/"},"modified":"2026-08-04T18:14:17","modified_gmt":"2026-08-04T18:14:17","slug":"officials-report-progress-on-a-deal-to-reopen-the-strait-of-hormuz","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/235890\/","title":{"rendered":"Officials report progress on a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CAIRO (AP) \u2014 Iran and the Gulf Arab state of Oman have made progress toward a deal to reopen the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/strait-of-hormuz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Strait of Hormuz<\/a>, a potential breakthrough that could help wind down the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/iran\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">war in the Middle East<\/a>, regional officials said Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Under the emerging agreement, ships would enter the Persian Gulf through an Iranian-controlled route and exit through a route controlled by Oman, with service fees charged for providing security and preserving the maritime environment, two regional officials told The Associated Press.<\/p>\n<p>They said negotiations are still underway and that the final agreement could take a different form, with any deal linked to lifting the U.S. blockade on Iran\u2019s ports. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive negotiations unfolding behind closed doors.<\/p>\n<p>Any agreement formalizing Iran\u2019s control of the strait would mark a significant strategic victory for Tehran. For that reason, the U.S. could seek to block the deal by refusing to lift the blockade. The strait was an open international waterway before the U.S. and Israel <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-us-explosion-tehran-c2f11247d8a66e36929266f2c557a54c\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">attacked Iran on Feb. 28<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A U.S. official familiar with the negotiations said that any \u201ctemporary\u201d routes established through the strait would not involve approvals by Iran or charges. The official, who was not authorized to comment publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity, said the U.S. remains committed to returning to the status quo in which \u201cno party controls the lanes or the ability to transit through them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>U.S. President <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/donald-trump\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump<\/a> is under mounting pressure to end <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-approval-iran-war-poll-republicans-election-55e9c80afec521d87f131393a59674c0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an unpopular war<\/a> that has driven up gas prices ahead of midterm elections and <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-war-patriot-thaad-missile-defense-trump-feda2255d8adbfff797da8d3ac8e3033\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">drawn down U.S. supplies of some munitions<\/a>. In recent days, he has again whipsawed between threatening massive strikes and voicing support for diplomatic efforts.<\/p>\n<p>In an exchange with reporters on Monday, Trump reiterated his public stance that he\u2019s opposed to tolling in the strait. \u201cI\u2019m not going to let them charge,\u201d Trump said. \u201cAnybody\u2019s going to charge, we\u2019ll charge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>US and Iranian officials confirm progress without giving details<\/p>\n<p>Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said the bilateral talks with Oman are focused on \u201cestablishing safe inbound and outbound shipping lanes,\u201d routes that \u201cuphold sovereign rights while also addressing the national security considerations of both Iran and Oman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe final results of these negotiations will be announced once concluded,\u201d he added, in remarks carried by Iran\u2019s state-run IRNA news agency.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, speaking to reporters at the State Department, said \u201cthere\u2019s been progress made in those talks, but not finality yet. We\u2019re hoping that will happen very shortly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rubio has previously ruled out any deal that would give Iran control over the strait, saying last month that it would create a <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/asean-rubio-south-china-sea-iran-war-12b3a257be0b6af9d96356dd78be3cfd\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cvery dangerous precedent\u201d<\/a> for other parts of the world.<\/p>\n<p>Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told CNBC that \u201cthere is a chance we may have a deal today or tomorrow to open the strait and move towards a more normalized position in this conflict.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"AnchorLink\" id=\"html-embed-module-a00000\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n    Sign up for Morning Wire:<br \/>\n    Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day.\n  <\/p>\n<p>Asked whether there would be tolls for movement through the strait, Bessent said: \u201cI think it would be freedom of movement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The potential agreement between Iran and Oman was first reported by The New York Times.<\/p>\n<p>Trump says this is Iran\u2019s \u2018last chance\u2019<\/p>\n<p>A fifth of the world\u2019s traded oil and gas transited the waterway before the war. Iranian attacks on ships have largely shut it down, causing a spike in the price of fuel, fertilizer and other goods, and rattling economies far beyond the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>Trump said Monday that the U.S. was in talks with Iran, saying it was Tehran\u2019s <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-iran-war-gulf-allies-fb81a68f999f4a7b0498ae71cbffe8e5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201clast chance\u201d<\/a> to reach a deal and avoid another U.S. military escalation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first phase is the opening of the straits.
