{"id":236169,"date":"2026-08-04T21:43:22","date_gmt":"2026-08-04T21:43:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/236169\/"},"modified":"2026-08-04T21:43:22","modified_gmt":"2026-08-04T21:43:22","slug":"oil-extends-losses-after-us-qatar-signal-progress-on-iran-draft-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/236169\/","title":{"rendered":"Oil Extends Losses After US, Qatar Signal Progress on Iran Draft Deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"speakable\">Brent crude fell back to around $80 per barrel after renewed optimism over a potential US-Iran draft agreement eased geopolitical fears, even as President Trump criticized US refiners for high fuel profits.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" data-large=\"true\" class=\"lozad\" src=\"https:\/\/d32r1sh890xpii.cloudfront.net\/tinymce\/2026-08\/1785858683-o_1jv6nhomtaq8fbg1eou7vc1vp78.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" data-large=\"true\" class=\"lozad\" src=\"https:\/\/d32r1sh890xpii.cloudfront.net\/tinymce\/2026-08\/1785858691-o_1jv6ni24p9f17du10pc1ip91cua8.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Trump Takes Aim at Big Oil\u2019s War Profits<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" data-large=\"true\" class=\"lozad\" src=\"https:\/\/d32r1sh890xpii.cloudfront.net\/tinymce\/2026-08\/1785858719-o_1jv6nitu91j131t1lf7p7tm7m08.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Runaway Q2 earnings of US oil majors have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/opinion\/articles\/2026-08-04\/a-cornered-trump-just-might-turn-on-big-oil\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">brought<\/a> bumper profits of energy companies back into the political limelight, with US President Trump ordering retailers to \u2018get retail prices down\u2019 as soon as possible. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Donald Trump accused ExxonMobil and Chevron of making too much money and told them to \u2018give some of that money back to the public\u2019, also calling them out for not crediting his administration\u2019s efforts to help the oil industry.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Whilst ExxonMobil\u2019s oil production was impacted by closures in the Middle East and Chevron continues to struggle with CPC closures in Kazakhstan, it was both companies\u2019 refining margins that have been stellar since the onset of the war in March.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; The 3-2-1 spread (2 barrels of gasoline, 1 barrel of distillates from 3 barrels of crude) has doubled since early March to $60 per barrel, whilst crude oil prices are only up by $11 per barrel after this week\u2019s renewed diplomatic push. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Meanwhile, the average US gasoline pump price has <a href=\"https:\/\/gasprices.aaa.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dipped<\/a> to $4.08 per gallon as of August 4, up 30% from a year ago.<\/p>\n<p>Market Movers<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; UK-based energy giant Shell (LON:SHEL) has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shell.com\/news-and-insights\/newsroom\/news-and-media-releases\/2026\/shell-signs-agreement-to-sell-european-onshore-renewables-portfolio-to-totalenergies.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">agreed<\/a> to sell its European onshore renewables portfolio to peer major TotalEnergies (NYSE:TTE) for an undisclosed sum, comprising 0.5 GW assets in operation and a 3.5 GW pipeline of projects.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; UK oil major BP (NYSE:BP) has <a href=\"https:\/\/oilprice.com\/Latest-Energy-News\/World-News\/BP-Completes-Sale-of-German-Refinery-as-Portfolio-Overhaul-Accelerates.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">completed<\/a> the divestment of its Gelsenkirchen refinery in Germany to investment firm Klesch Group, leaving it with only five operational refineries (2 in the US, 3 in Europe).<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Azerbaijan\u2019s state oil company SOCAR has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trend.az\/business\/energy\/4212248.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bought<\/a> out the 3.65% operating interest held by Japanese trading company Itochu (TYO:8001) in the Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli (ACG) offshore field, marking the fourth exit from the project.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Nigeria\u2019s Dangote oil refinery is reportedly planning to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/nigerias-dangote-refinery-aims-raise-5-billion-with-october-listing-source-says-2026-08-04\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">launch<\/a> its initial public offering, believed to be Africa\u2019s largest ever listing, in October with owner Aliko Dangote pushing regional capital markets to take part in the IPO. <br \/>Tuesday, August 04, 2026<\/p>\n<p>Crude oil prices have been pushed lower this week as comments from US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Qatar\u2019s Foreign Ministry about a potential draft agreement being drafted buoyed hopes for a diplomatic resolution to the US-Iran conflict. ICE Brent is now back at $80 per barrel, just in time US oil refiners after President Trump lambasted them for making \u2018too much money\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>OPEC+ to Complete Voluntary Production Cuts. Seven remaining OPEC+ member countries have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opec.org\/pr-detail\/1870612-2-august-2026.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">agreed<\/a> to raise their collective output targets by 188,000 b\/d in September, completing the phased unwinding of 1.65 million b\/d voluntary production cuts first announced in 2023, even if on paper.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hormuz Shut or Not, Saudi Budget Gets Its Money. Saudi national oil company Saudi Aramco (TADAWUL:2222) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-08-04\/aramco-profit-jumps-33-as-us-war-with-iran-boosts-oil-prices?srnd=phx-economics-v2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> a 33% jump in Q2 profits, rising to $33.4 billion, as surging oil prices have softened the blow from lower oil production with Aramco\u2019s average barrel sold at a hefty $108.10. <br \/>ADNOC Ditches Own Futures for Dubai Pricing. From November 1, Abu Dhabi\u2019s state oil company ADNOC will <a href=\"https:\/\/oilprice.com\/Energy\/Oil-Prices\/ADNOC-Makes-One-of-the-Biggest-Changes-to-Middle-East-Crude-Pricing-in-Years.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">price<\/a> all its grades against Platts Dubai, abandoning its futures-based IFAD Murban mechanism after buyers started demanding prompter pricing amidst Hormuz disruptions.<\/p>\n<p>Pemex Takes Its Time with Leaking Gas Well. Mexico\u2019s state oil company PEMEX has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/mexicos-pemex-completes-closure-krem-1-well-months-after-accident-2026-08-03\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">closed<\/a> its Krem-1 exploratory well some 5 months after an accident triggered a fire, leading to flaring that may have burned 300 million cubic meters of gas, with environmental monitoring still underway.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Iran and Oman Map Out New Hormuz Route. Tehran says it has discussed with Omani officials the creation of a single shipping corridor through the Strait of Hormuz with separate entry and exit lanes, potentially contradicting initial media reports that suggested Tehran rejected the idea.<br \/>Brazil\u2019s Hottest Exploration Well Delayed. Iraq and Turkey have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/iraq-expects-sign-extension-pipeline-deal-with-turkey-ina-says-2026-08-01\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">formalized<\/a> a one-year agreement to maintain crude exports through the Kirkuk-Ceyhan pipeline that evacuates Iraqi crude to the Mediterranean, with the deal providing for a quadrupling of export flows to 750,000 b\/d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Syria Agrees to Slash Russian Crude Imports. The al Julani-led Syrian government has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/syria-tells-us-it-is-willing-drastically-drop-russian-oil-imports-sources-say-2026-08-04\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">agreed<\/a> to drastically cut its imports of Russian crude, averaging some 60,000 b\/d in 2026 to date, as part of Damascus\u2019 ongoing discussions with the Trump administration to lift all remaining sanctions.<\/p>\n<p>Hormuz Transits Plunge to Two-Month Low. Hormuz transits have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/world\/strait-of-hormuz-iran-united-states-oil-9.7295480\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dropped<\/a> to their lowest since June after the Liberia-flagged dry bulk tanker Minoan Pioneer was targeted early Tuesday, with one seafarer missing and the crew abandoning the vessel, two days after a VLCC carrying Iraqi oil was hit.<\/p>\n<p>Qatar Doesn\u2019t Give Up on Expansions. Contractors Chiyoda and Technip Energies have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upstreamonline.com\/lng\/work-restarts-on-qatarenergys-nfe-gas-megaproject\/2-1-2024306\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">resumed<\/a> construction of Qatar\u2019s 32 mtpa North Field East expansion, with the first train undergoing commissioning and the second completed, with traders expecting first volumes by summer 2027.<\/p>\n<p>Iran War Drains Billions from Global Supply.
