Welcome back to the City AM liveblog.<\/p>\n

Oil prices are moving lower for the third consecutive trading session on hopes a deal between the US and Iran could be drawing closer.<\/p>\n

Brent crude fell below $79 per barrel on Wednesday morning, bringing its weekly decline to more than 10 per cent. <\/p>\n

This came as Qatar\u2019s foreign ministry, which has helped mediate negotiations between Washington and Iran, said the two nations were in \u201cvery progressive stages\u201d to resolve the conflict.<\/p>\n

It added drafts of a potential agreement were \u201cbeing circulated\u201d but there was no direct communication between Trump and Iran.<\/p>\n

The Trump administration has signalled some optimism with Secretary of State Marco Rubio declaring there has been progress \u201cbut not finality.\u201d Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said a consensus could be reached in the next few days. <\/p>\n

But caution and risk still surrounds the all-important Strait of Hormuz, which is helping keep oil prices elevated.<\/p>\n

A cargo vessel was struck by an unknown projectile in the strait and suffered a complete blackout on Tuesday, according to a report from the Marisks maritime risk management group.<\/p>\n

President Trump<\/a> has renewed threats to Iran over access to the narrow waterway.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Strait\u2019s going to be open very soon or they are going to get hit very hard,\u201d he said, adding \u201cif they back out again, they are going to get hit really hard. They know that. They understand that. I have no choice.\u201d<\/p>\n
