DUBAI, Aug 5 (Reuters) – Iran and Oman have reached an understanding on the geographic coordinates for a \u200cshipping route through the Strait of Hormuz, and \u200ca joint announcement is being finalised, provided certain third parties did not \u200binterfere, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Baghaei added that any such agreement between Iran and Oman would not, by itself, guarantee security in the strategic waterway.<\/p>\n
The \u200cproposed deal between \u2060Iran and Oman would give Tehran control over ships entering the Gulf through the Strait \u2060of Hormuz, a senior Iranian source and two regional officials told Reuters on Wednesday, in one of the biggest concessions \u200byet to \u200bIran.<\/p>\n
Despite the apparent step \u200btowards yielding to Iranian demands, \u200cthe sources pushed back against assertions by U.S. President Donald Trump that a deal reopening the strait was imminent, saying important details still had to be agreed.<\/p>\n
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei described the negotiations between Tehran \u200cand Muscat as “professional” and “moving forward”, saying “the \u200btwo sides had reached a mutual \u200bunderstanding on the \u200bgeographical parameters of the route under discussion”.<\/p>\n
Baghaei added \u200cthat, if some third parties \u200bdo not \u200bobstruct the process, the joint statement between the two countries, containing the main considerations and key points of \u200bunderstanding, was in \u200cthe final stages of review and drafting.<\/p>\n
