al-Kuwatli told The New Arab.

He also warned that applying the death penalty could complicate attempts to bring suspects living abroad back to Syria to stand trial.

“Executing Hassoun would make it much harder for Syria to request the extradition of actual war criminals from countries that oppose the death penalty, and would have a negative impact on the transitional justice process,” he said.

Hassoun was one of the most prominent religious figures associated with the Assad era and regularly appeared publicly in support of the regime during the Syrian conflict.

His case forms part of a wider series of prosecutions against senior political, security and regime-linked figures following Assad’s removal from power.

Syrian courts have also set 11 August as the date for a verdict in the case of Atef Najib, the former head of the Political Security branch in Daraa.

Najib became one of the most notorious security officials associated with the early stages of the 2011 uprising, after children in Daraa were detained and tortured for writing anti-government graffiti on walls.

A verdict against Wassim al-Assad, a cousin of the ousted president, is meanwhile expected on 18 August.

The sequence of rulings will culminate with the verdict in Hassoun’s case on 24 August, as Syria’s new authorities continue proceedings against figures accused of abuses and complicity in crimes committed during the former regime.

Hassoun is accused of aiding in the committing of war crimes and inciting violence against anti-Assad Syrian protesters…

[30
7156,95,6101,1823
post-240102","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-syria","tag-assad-regime","tag-syria","tag-transitional-justice","tag-trial
["GET
