Progress had reportedly been made on border issues and the return of prisoners during the latest negotiations between Lebanon and Israel in Rome.<\/p>\n

Progress was reported on border issues and the return of prisoners during the latest Lebanon\u2013Israel negotiations in Rome, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said.<\/p>\n

Aoun said the talks \u2014 the seventh round and opposed by Hezbollah \u2014 focused on four points: a ceasefire, house demolitions, the border and the return of prisoners, along with identifying pilot areas.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He said \u201cpositive progress\u201d was made on border and prisoner matters and said he hoped practical steps would follow.<\/p>\n

He said the U.S. administration would take up the remaining issues of a cease-fire and pilot areas.<\/p>\n

His comments came a day after Israeli and Lebanese officials wrapped up three days of talks in Rome aimed at advancing border security arrangements and implementing a framework agreement reached in Washington in late June.<\/p>\n

Conditions in Lebanon remain severe.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Last month, UN\u2011appointed independent human rights experts warned civilians were facing a \u201cdevastating and disproportionate toll,\u201d with homes destroyed, towns cut off and many southern communities still inaccessible.<\/p>\n
