A fatal shooting at a Lebanon intersection<\/a> was one of the first breaking news events that happened when I began covering Warren County in June 2024. It was a rare fatal shooting in a quiet suburb at an ordinary intersection that shocked the city and caused a flurry of responses on social media. Enquirer breaking news reporters covered the incident<\/a>, but we were left with many unanswered questions.<\/p>\n

I was approached about the case again in 2025. Now, two years after the shooting, I decided to dig into its aftermath, the grand jury’s decision not to indict the shooter, and what happened during those fateful seconds at the crossing of State Route 48 and U.S. 42\u00a0that led to the end of Andrew Rainey’s life.<\/p>\n

At the time, witnesses and Lebanon residents were divided about what happened. Starkly different descriptions of the scene led to a decision not to indict by a Warren County grand jury.<\/p>\n

For this story, I re-interviewed witnesses who spoke to police; family members of Rainey, the man who died; the county prosecutor; and others who were connected to the case. I also reached out to police officers who investigated the shooting and the person who fired the fatal bullet.<\/p>\n

After conducting almost a dozen interviews and watching hours of investigative footage, one thing became clear: two years later, people are still divided about this case. But they agreed on one thing: its impact on Lebanon, Rainey’s family and friends, and those who witnessed the shooting is still deeply felt.<\/p>\n
