{"id":242616,"date":"2026-08-09T21:40:31","date_gmt":"2026-08-09T21:40:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/242616\/"},"modified":"2026-08-09T21:40:31","modified_gmt":"2026-08-09T21:40:31","slug":"russia-explores-possible-rail-route-to-india-amid-strait-of-hormuz-risks-what-we-know","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/242616\/","title":{"rendered":"Russia explores possible rail route to India amid Strait of Hormuz risks: What we know"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>3 min readUpdated: Aug 10, 2026 12:00 AM IST<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Russia is exploring the possibility of creating a <a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/about\/ministry-of-railways\/\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">railway r<\/a>oute to the Indian Ocean, with access to <a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/india\/indian-railways-15-stations-redevelopment-ppp-model-full-list-10822313\/\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">India among the options<\/a> being considered, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin said in an interview with TASS.<\/p>\n<p>Khusnullin said a rail link could help reduce risks linked to the Bosphorus and the Strait of Hormuz, and suggested possible routes through Turkmenistan, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan. He added that \u201cany options providing access to India are acceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyloading\" data-lazy-type=\"lazyloading-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/track_1x1.jpg\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/track_1x1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1px\" height=\"1px\" style=\"display:none;\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman, while the Bosphorus connects the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara. Turkiye, which controls the Bosphorus, has said the strait remains open despite the heightened concerns.<\/p>\n<p>The Deputy Prime Minister also said that Russia\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/cities\/kolkata\/irctc-thailand-tour-kolkata-6-day-package-rs-49500-10823681\/\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">construction industry currently needs long-term financing<\/a> to support its growth and development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe construction industry is already capable of handling an additional one trillion rubles annually. However, if such a volume is secured for the next five years, it would be possible to expand capacity and build even more,\u201d he told TASS.<\/p>\n<p>The move comes amid the ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/india\/indian-railways-423-km-new-rail-lines-west-bengal-ashwini-vaishnaw-10822202\/\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">conflict between the US and Iran<\/a>, which has raised concerns over shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. \u201cRoughly 25% of global oil trade and about 20% of LNG shipments transit through the Strait of Hormuz,\u201d TASS reported.<\/p>\n<p>On August 7, India and Russia reviewed their cooperation in key sectors during the <a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/india\/indian-railways-orders-faster-completion-train-accident-inquiries-10820484\/\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">12th Session of the India-Russia Working Group on Modernization and Industrial Cooperation<\/a>, held in New Delhi.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>The meeting, held under the Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation, focused on progress in areas including modernization, mining, fertilizers and railway transport.<\/p>\n<p>Both sides welcomed new areas of cooperation in railway transport, including railway infrastructure, the Vande Bharat train project and signalling equipment.
