{"id":242784,"date":"2026-08-10T02:30:19","date_gmt":"2026-08-10T02:30:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/242784\/"},"modified":"2026-08-10T02:30:19","modified_gmt":"2026-08-10T02:30:19","slug":"iran-names-new-security-chief-whos-wanted-by-interpol-in-connection-with-deadly-amia-bombing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/242784\/","title":{"rendered":"Iran names new security chief who&#8217;s wanted by Interpol in connection with deadly AMIA bombing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The former commander-in-chief of Iran\u2019s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Mohsen Rezaei, has been named head of the country\u2019s highest national security body, the Iranian presidency announced on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to previously leading the elite IRGC paramilitary, Rezaei, 71, is wanted on an international arrest warrant for his alleged role in one of the deadliest antisemitic attacks of recent decades, the bombing of the AMIA Jewish community center in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1994.<\/p>\n<p>Rezaei is the second person tapped to head Iran\u2019s Supreme National Security Council since Israel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/israel-says-irans-de-facto-leader-ali-larijani-basij-force-chief-killed-overnight\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">assassinated the powerful Iranian official Ali Larijani in mid-March<\/a>, just weeks into the US-Israeli war with the Islamic Republic. (Anwar AMRO \/ AFP)<\/p>\n<p>Rezaei earlier this month said Iran will never allow an unauthorized route through the Strait of Hormuz, which was considered an international waterway and a key pathway for the global oil supply before Tehran began obstructing it at the start of the war.<\/p>\n<p>He declared in July that control of the Strait was \u201cmore important than dozens of atomic bombs,\u201d a reference to the Iranian nuclear program, which is also one of the war\u2019s central issues.<\/p>\n<p>Wanted by Interpol for alleged role in AMIA attack<\/p>\n<p>Rezaei led the IRGC from 1981 to 1997 \u2014 a tenure that included almost all of the Iran-Iraq war \u2014 before going on to occupy several high-ranking political posts. He recently served as the younger Khamenei\u2019s military adviser.<\/p>\n<p>During his tenure as head of the IRGC, he was allegedly involved in the AMIA attack. The bombing, according to an Argentine court ruling, was carried out by Hezbollah terrorists and funded by Iran. The global police organization <a href=\"https:\/\/www.interpol.int\/ar\/1\/1\/2007\/INTERPOL-General-Assembly-upholds-Executive-Committee-decision-on-AMIA-Red-Notice-dispute\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has had a \u201cRed Notice\u201d<\/a> out for his arrest since 2007, along with seeking the arrests of five other Iranians and a Lebanese national.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, Argentina <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/argentina-asks-qatar-to-arrest-iran-official-for-alleged-role-in-1994-amia-bombing\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">asked Qatar<\/a> to arrest Rezaei when he was in the Gulf state, but Qatar did not do so.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe accusation made against him arises from his proven participation at the meeting in which carrying out the attack on AMIA\u2019s headquarters was decided,\u201d said Argentine federal judge Daniel Rafecas in an official letter to Qatar at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier that year, a public appearance by Rezaei at the investiture of Nicaragua\u2019s president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/argentina-fumes-after-iranian-amia-bomb-suspect-spotted-at-nicaragua-ceremony\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">angered Argentina<\/a> and drew a harsh response from its Foreign Ministry, which called Rezaei\u2019s presence \u201can affront to Argentine justice and to the victims of the brutal terrorist attack\u2033 in the Argentine capital.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\tHelp us report truthfully on social media\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"200\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/gabriella-200.png\" class=\"attachment-square size-square wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\"\/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>As a multimedia journalist, my job is to take the quality, fact-based journalism produced by The Times of Israel newsroom and make it accessible across every platform \u2014 from Instagram posts to podcasts to short-form videos.<\/p>\n<p>This is how many, especially young people, consume news these days.
