The
\nIraqi government said on Monday that the postponement of a threatened response
\nby armed factions against the US and Saudi Arabia that killed 20 of the Popular
\nMobilization Forces (PMF) and injured 32 others was part of official
\ncoordination to contain tension and prevent Iraq from being used as a launchpad
\nfor attacks on neighboring states.<\/p>\n
Government
\nspokesman Haidar al-Aboudi told a news conference, in reply to a question from
\nShafaq News, that a meeting of the State Administration Coalition \u2014the
\ncross-party alliance of the main parliamentary blocs that backs the government\u2014
\nwas preceded by coordination between senior officials and the cabinet in
\nsupport of the government program, which includes Iraqi territory not being used for attacks against other countries.<\/p>\n

\nspokesperson confirmed that the Iraqi government \u201chad no advance<\/a> knowledge of
\nthe strikes on PMF sites,\u201d rejecting claims that it held prior<\/a> information
\nabout the attack and failed to act. \u201cSome were seeking to inflame public
\nopinion over the issue.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nthe file of restricting weapons to state authority, al-Aboudi pointed out that
\nthe dialogue is proceeding along defined tracks under the direct supervision of
\nPrime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi, within the legal and constitutional framework and
\nthe principle of a state of institutions. He acknowledged concern and
\nreservations<\/a> among some parties, but \u201cthe government aims to bring all weapons
\nunder state control by the set deadline of September 30.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nalso disclosed that al-Zaidi had received an invitation<\/a> to visit Saudi Arabia,
\nthough no date had been set. The prime minister\u2019s visit was scheduled on August
\n1 but canceled<\/a> after the strikes on the PMF headquarters.<\/p>\n
