President\u00a0Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0announced Monday that the United States will begin working a new demand into all future negotiations with\u00a0Iran<\/a>: compensation for the families of victims harmed or killed by the Iranian regime, or its proxies, over the past 50 years.<\/p>\n

Over the weekend, Tehran submitted its own set of new demands for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, which included complete compensation for damages wrought by the president\u2019s bombing campaigns.<\/p>\n

The U.S. did not publicly respond to Iran\u2019s demands, but Trump<\/a> himself wrote on social media that the subject was \u201cnever mentioned in any of our negotiations or meetings.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow I am likewise demanding compensation from Iran, for all of the people that they have killed and gravely wounded with their roadside bombs and many conflicts, for which they are famous, as led initially by General Soleimani, including the families of those killed on the USS Cole, and thousands of others killed in combat,\u201d said in a post on Truth Social. \u201cAdditionally, compensation should be paid to the families of the hundreds of thousands of innocent protestors that Iran has killed over the last 50 years, not to mention the 52,000 that have been killed in the last five months.\u201d<\/p>\n

The president concluded by stating that he has \u201cinstructed\u201d his negotiating team to \u201cput this firmly into any, and all, future negotiations.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since the U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding collapsed in early July, the president has struggled to make substantive progress toward ending the war.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, he told Axios that the U.S. is now \u201clow-keying\u201d the war, suggesting he is willing to allow Iran\u2019s economic constraints to bring it back to the negotiating table in time.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are only semi-negotiating with them,\u201d the president said. \u201cWe are just watching Iran with its huge inflation\u00a0and the fact they have no money. It will work out. It always works out.
