Aug 10 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday he will demand that Iran pay compensation for “all \u200cof the people that they have killed and \u200cgravely wounded,” in response to Iran seeking compensation for the damages it \u200bhas incurred from U.S. and Israeli attacks.<\/p>\n
Trump’s social media post came after Iran said over the weekend it was nearing a deal with Oman defining new shipping lanes between them through \u200cthe Strait of Hormuz \u2060but repeated that the U.S. must meet conditions including compensation and an end to sanctions and \u2060military threats, before the strategic waterway is reopened.<\/p>\n
“It is an interesting idea because now I am likewise demanding compensation from Iran, \u200bfor \u200ball of the people that \u200bthey have killed and gravely \u200cwounded with their roadside bombs and many conflicts,” he wrote on Truth Social.<\/p>\n
Trump also referenced and claimed compensation from Iran for the October 2000 deadly bombing of the U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyer USS Cole at a Yemeni port. The FBI \u200chas attributed that bombing, which killed \u200b17 sailors and wounded more than \u200bthree dozen others, \u200bto al Qaeda.<\/p>\n
Trump added that Tehran should also \u200cpay compensation to the families \u200bof the thousands \u200bof people during anti-government protests in January, Iran’s worst domestic unrest since the era of its 1979 Islamic \u200bRevolution.<\/p>\n
Rights groups say \u200cthe Iranian government has continued to crack down on \u200bopponents during the war.<\/p>\n
