{"id":244414,"date":"2026-08-11T07:17:14","date_gmt":"2026-08-11T07:17:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/244414\/"},"modified":"2026-08-11T07:17:14","modified_gmt":"2026-08-11T07:17:14","slug":"iaea-said-prepping-to-remove-syria-nuclear-material-left-over-from-assad-era","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/244414\/","title":{"rendered":"IAEA said prepping to remove Syria nuclear material left over from Assad era"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The International Atomic Energy Agency will soon remove nuclear material from clandestine facilities in Syria, after the White House reached understandings with Damascus and Israel, Axios <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/08\/10\/syria-nuclear-israel-turkey-iaea\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The report, which cited Israeli and US officials, said a \u201cdramatic, behind-the-scenes exchange of threats and diplomacy\u201d erupted months ago concerning the secret site, and was only resolved several weeks ago with an agreement to remove the material, possibly by the end of this year.<\/p>\n<p>In 2007, Israel bombed the al-Kibar reactor in Deir Ezzor, Syria, where then-president Bashar al-Assad was \u2014 according to Israeli, US, and IAEA assessments \u2014 building a secret nuclear weapons program.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/ending-a-decade-of-silence-israel-reveals-it-blew-up-assads-nuclear-reactor\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">attack<\/a>, which Israel refused to comment on until 2018, is believed to have ended the regime\u2019s efforts to build a nuclear weapon. (AP Photo\/Ghaith Alsayed)<\/p>\n<p>At the end of 2024, when the Assad regime fell to the Islamist-led rebels who now head the Syrian government, Israel bombed the entrance to the al-Kibar site.<\/p>\n<p>For more than a year afterward, Israel and the US discussed Site 99, with senior officials from the White House and Prime Minister\u2019s Office liaising about the issue, Axios said.<\/p>\n<p>In June 2025, IAEA chairman Rafael Grossi said Syria had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/iaea-chief-syria-to-give-inspectors-immediate-access-to-suspected-former-nuclear-sites\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">agreed<\/a> to give inspectors access to suspected former nuclear sites.<\/p>\n<p>Israel threatened to strike the facility if the nuclear material were not taken out, or if the new government tried to reach it, Axios reported, though this threat was never close to being put into action, according to a US official.<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, Israel and the US opted to work with the new Syrian government on the issue.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2026\/07\/AP26189530771489.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3857508\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP26189530771489-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n\t\tU.S. President Donald Trump meets with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, Wednesday, July 8, 2026.
