{"id":244964,"date":"2026-08-11T14:47:11","date_gmt":"2026-08-11T14:47:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/244964\/"},"modified":"2026-08-11T14:47:11","modified_gmt":"2026-08-11T14:47:11","slug":"lebanon-becomes-first-arab-nation-to-abolish-death-penalty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/244964\/","title":{"rendered":"Lebanon becomes first Arab nation to abolish death penalty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a landmark change to <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/lebanon?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Lebanon\u2019s<\/a> penal system, the country\u2019s parliament on Tuesday approved legislation abolishing the death penalty, replacing it with life imprisonment with aggravated hard labour, the state-run National News Agency reported.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The vote makes Lebanon the first Arab country to formally abolish the death penalty.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Justice Minister Adel Nassar, who attended the parliamentary session, described the vote as a \u201chistoric step\u201d for Lebanon.<\/p>\n<p>The measure was approved by a majority of the 128-member parliament, though <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/hezbollah?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Hezbollah\u2019s<\/a> parliamentary bloc opposed it, according to government sources.
