Iran will host senior officials from the five Caspian Sea littoral states at a conference in Tehran on 23 September, aimed at strengthening regional cooperation and addressing environmental challenges facing the sea. <\/p>\n

Tehran conference planned for September<\/p>\n

Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem\u00a0Gharibabadi\u00a0said on Tuesday that Tehran\u00a0would host a conference of \u201ctop-ranking\u201d officials from the Caspian Sea littoral states\u00a0on 23 September.<\/p>\n


\n \n <\/p>\n

\u201cIt would provide an opportunity for bilateral and multilateral talks and help strengthen regional cooperation,\u201d he said at a ceremony\u00a0marking\u00a0the National Day of the Caspian Sea,\u00a0observed\u00a0on 12 August.<\/p>\n


\n \n <\/p>\n

The date marks the entry into force in 2006 of the Framework Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea, also known as the Tehran Convention.<\/p>\n


\n \n <\/p>\n

\u201cFollowing the agreement of the coastal states \u2013 Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Turkmenistan,\u201d Gharibabadi added, \u201cthe ground is set for convention of the Seventh Conference of the Parties to the Tehran Convention\u201d.<\/p>\n


\n \n <\/p>\n

Tehran\u00a0had proposed hosting a Caspian summit\u00a0on 12 August 2026 to commemorate\u00a0Caspian Sea Day, but the event could not be convened because of conditions following the Israeli-U.S. war with Iran.<\/p>\n


\n \n <\/p>\n

The Iranian official also said that recent hostilities\u00a0had\u00a0further increased the Caspian Sea\u2019s geopolitical and strategic significance.<\/p>\n


\n \n <\/p>\n

\u201cRegional security should be maintained by the five coastal states,\u201d\u00a0Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency\u00a0quoted him as saying.<\/p>\n


\n \n <\/p>\n

Caspian security and environmental concerns<\/p>\n

His statements came after an Iranian commercial vessel was hit by a Ukrainian military drone in\u00a0Russian territorial waters in the Caspian Sea in July, killing\u00a0one sailor aboard.<\/p>\n


\n \n <\/p>\n

Iran shares a\u00a0650-kilometre coastline along the southern Caspian Sea.\u00a0Last November, it hosted the\u00a0first Forum of Caspian Sea Governors-General\u00a0in Rasht,\u00a0the capital of Iran\u2019s Caspian province of Gilan.<\/p>\n


\n \n <\/p>\n

The conference discussed a wide range of topics,\u00a0including the economy, investment and regional development, as well as the environment, fisheries and restoration of the Caspian Sea ecosystem. Transit, logistics and development of the International North-South Transport Corridor were also discussed.<\/p>\n


\n \n <\/p>\n

Gharibabadi also urged the five\u00a0Caspian littoral states to fulfil their responsibilities to protect\u00a0the world’s largest inland body of water, warning that neglect could cause irreparable damage.<\/p>\n

Turkmenistan proposes environmental summit<\/p>\n

“Since our friendly and\u00a0neighbouring\u00a0country Turkmenistan has proposed to hold a summit on the environment and to examine the phenomenon of the decline in the Caspian water level on October 8 in Ashgabat and in the Avaza region of Turkmenistan, we welcomed this proposal.”<\/p>\n


\n \n <\/p>\n

The senior Iranian diplomat added: \u201cDeclining Caspian water levels, pollution, climate change, and weakening of the ecosystem can directly affect the lives of coastal communities, economic activities, fisheries, transportation, ports, and coastal infrastructure.\u201d<\/p>\n
