Three Pakistani nationals were among those killed when Iranian-backed Houthis attacked a ship off Yemen, the first known deaths from the rebels\u2019 attacks on shipping in the\u00a0latest bout of fighting<\/a>\u00a0that has raised fears of war expanding in the region.<\/p>\n

Three Pakistanis among the dead in Houthi attack on ship<\/p>\n

Pakistan\u2019s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Wednesday condemned the attack by Houthi rebels on the ship in the Bab el-Mandeb strait, saying three Pakistanis had been killed in the attack and another wounded. A total of six people were killed in the attack on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cSuch attacks endanger innocent lives, constitute a violation of international law, and pose a serious threat to freedom of navigation, maritime security, and the safety of commercial shipping in the Red Sea,\u201d Dar said in a post on X.<\/p>\n

With the\u00a0Strait of Hormuz<\/a>\u00a0effectively shut down by Iran and a U.S. blockade on Iranian ports, there has been a renewed focus on the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb strait at Yemen\u2019s southern tip, which is an alternate route for Saudi Arabia to ship its oil.<\/p>\n

The attack came as part of a growing number of Houthi strikes against government forces in Yemen and oil facilities in neighboring Saudi Arabia, which supports the Yemeni government, and the kingdom\u2019s shipping in the Red Sea.<\/p>\n

Many of the attacks have been focused on the government-held port city of Mokha on the Red Sea. Overall, dozens of government troops and civilians have been killed in attacks since last week, according to Yemen\u2019s military.<\/p>\n

Fears are growing that the renewed violence could reignite Yemen\u2019s civil war following a 2022 truce, and open a new front in the Middle East war.<\/p>\n

Pakistan presses to defuse tensions between US and Iran<\/p>\n

Pakistan\u2019s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar met Iranian Ambassador Reza Amiri Moghadam in Islamabad on Wednesday as Pakistan seeks to resume peace negotiations between Iran and the U.S.<\/p>\n

Their meeting came a day after Pakistan sent Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi to Tehran for talks with Iran\u2019s top leaders.<\/p>\n

An interim deal to end the fighting reached in mid-June is set to expire Monday. The ceasefire collapsed last month as the U.S. and Iran exchanged strikes over more than two weeks before pausing.<\/p>\n

Pakistani Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tahir Andrabi told reporters Wednesday the June deal remains valid and the deadline could be extended.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are not closing the chapter,\u201d Andrabi said.<\/p>\n

Talks have bogged down over Iran\u2019s chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly one-fifth of the world\u2019s traded oil supplies passed before the war. Washington demands that Iran reopen the strait, while\u00a0Tehran insists<\/a>\u00a0the U.S. must first end its blockade of Iranian ports and meet other conditions.<\/p>\n

Turkey condemns Colombia\u2019s recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights<\/p>\n

Turkey condemned the decision by Colombia\u2019s\u00a0new government<\/a>, calling it a move to \u201clegitimize Israel\u2019s occupation\u201d of the territory.<\/p>\n

Colombia, shortly after the swearing-in of conservative\u00a0Abelardo de la Espriella<\/a>\u00a0as president on Friday, became just the second country to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights, which Israel captured during the 1967 Middle East war and later annexed in 1981.<\/p>\n

The United States, during the first term of President Donald Trump, was the first, reversing more than a half-century of U.S. policy in the Middle East. De la Espriella, a Colombian-American citizen, received Trump\u2019s backing during his election campaign.<\/p>\n

Turkey\u2019s Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the Golan Heights are an \u201cintegral part of Syria\u201d and said Colombia\u2019s move constitutes \u201ca grave violation of international law.\u201d<\/p>\n

The United Nations recognizes the territory as part of Syria.<\/p>\n

The Turkish statement called on the international community to work toward ending Israel\u2019s occupation of the Golan Heights and other parts of southern Syria.<\/p>\n

Israeli troops accused of destroying a Lebanese school building<\/p>\n

Israeli forces occupying the village of Zawtar al-Sharqiyah in southern Lebanon also blew up buildings including a municipal building and a children\u2019s nursery, Lebanon\u2019s state-run National News Agency reported.<\/p>\n

The village\u2019s municipal council called the destruction a \u201cheinous crime.\u201d There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military.<\/p>\n

Zawtar al-Sharqiyah is adjacent to a newly implemented \u201cpilot zone\u201d from which Israeli forces are supposed to gradually withdraw and hand control to the Lebanese army in exchange for disarmament of the Iran-backed Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.<\/p>\n

Lebanese officials have objected to the Israeli military\u2019s ongoing detonation of homes and other buildings in southern Lebanon amid negotiations to expand the pilot zones.<\/p>\n
