(NewsNation<\/a>) \u2014 The Iranian regime is now signaling it will not end its fight in the Middle East<\/a> until President Donald Trump is out of office. At the center of it all: control over the Strait of Hormuz<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Trump<\/a> is making it clear the waterway is open and under United States control. However, traffic through the key shipping route has fallen to a three-month low, while oil stockpiles are rapidly diminishing.<\/p>\n

Now, Trump is turning his focus on economic warfare \u2014 leaning on crippling sanctions and a U.S. naval blockade to force Iranians back to the table, with the goal of reopening the strait.<\/p>\n

But the question remains: Will the Trump administration get what it wants in return?\u2003<\/p>\n

US has ‘total control’ of the Strait of Hormuz: Trump<\/p>\n

Trump wrote<\/a>\u00a0Wednesday on social media the U.S. has “total control” of the Strait of Hormuz and suggested the country would maintain that control.<\/p>\n

“Our Naval Blockade is being called, by everyone, ‘A WALL OF STEEL,’ and there is nothing Iran can do about it,” he wrote.<\/p>\n

Iran pushed back via the Persian Gulf Strait Authority, saying claims and repeated posts by U.S. officials that the Strait of Hormuz is no longer blocked do not change the reality on the ground. Iran also said the Strait of Hormuz remains blocked and will not be reopened until its conditions are accepted.<\/p>\n

Trump turns to economic warfare<\/p>\n

There’s another factor in this back-and-forth: A top adviser to the commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard says Iran could prolong the war until Trump is out of office.<\/p>\n

So what does the economic reality look like for Iran, and what ripple effect does it have on the rest of the world?<\/p>\n

The White House says Iran’s economy has been severely damaged, with rising inflation, reduced energy revenues, an uptick in poverty and limited access to foreign currencies.<\/p>\n

The naval blockade appears to be having an impact.<\/p>\n

According to NewsNation partner The Hill, a Pentagon assessment found the first U.S. blockade, between April and June, cost Iran about $4.8 billion in oil revenue.<\/p>\n

But the economic consequences extend far beyond Iran.<\/p>\n

Oil prices surge<\/p>\n

Shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz is now about 90% lower than the daily average of 130 ships that transited the waterway before the initial strikes in February.<\/p>\n

That is putting pressure on oil reserves around the world.<\/p>\n

Regardless of which side controls the strait, oil prices are rising.<\/p>\n

Brent crude is up about 10.5% since Monday, reaching $88.98 a barrel as of Wednesday.<\/p>\n

West Texas Intermediate, the benchmark tied closely to U.S. gasoline prices, is up about 5.7%, reaching $83.27 a barrel as of Wednesday.<\/p>\n
