Welcome back to the City AM liveblog.<\/p>\n

Oil prices are holding up at $87 per barrel this morning as investors remain locked in wait-and-see mode while monitoring new updates coming out of US-Iran negotiations and efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n

The Iranian regime\u00a0handed a major blow to peace optimism after suggestining it could deliberately prolong the war with\u00a0the US until Donald Trump leaves office.<\/p>\n

Mohammad Reza Naghdi, senior adviser to the commander of Iran\u2019s Revolutionary Guards, said dragging out the war would\u00a0send a message to any future US administration\u00a0that \u201cthere is a cost\u201d to hostile advances against Iran.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have to\u00a0attain deterrence\u00a0so that the enemy never dares to attack\u00a0us, so we can live with security,\u201d he said during an appearance on PBS NewsHour.<\/p>\n

It follows Trump<\/a> and Iran clashing over which party has control of the narrow waterway. The President has said the US has \u201ctotal control,\u201d but Tehran has said it has the strait \u201cblocked\u201d and will not reopen until Iran\u2019s conditions are accepted.<\/p>\n

Earlier in the week, Trump said that \u201cpraise be to Allah\u201d, Washington has \u201ctotal control over the Strait of Hormuz\u201d, adding: \u201cI THINK WE WILL KEEP IT!\u201d<\/p>\n

David Morrison, senior market analyst at Trade Nation, said: \u201cWhile US-Iran peace efforts remained stalled and disruption around the Strait of Hormuz persisted, the focus for\u00a0oil\u00a0traders has shifted towards talk of slowing demand growth.\u201d<\/p>\n

It follows the global energy watchdog, the International Energy Agency, warning oil stockpiles were \u201crapidly depleting\u201d as progress stalls to get ships through the strait.<\/p>\n
