More than eight lawsuits have been filed against
\nsand-processing plants in Al-Anbar province, western Iraq, over environmental
\nviolations, the province\u2019s Environment Director Qais Najeh told Shafaq News on
\nFriday.<\/p>\n

The Directorate\u2019s legal department and the Environmental
\nProtection and Improvement Police referred the cases to the court for action
\nagainst the plant owners. Najeh said the judge had summoned the owners named in
\nthe lawsuits to proceed with the required measures.<\/p>\n

Last month, Al-Anbar\u2019s Environment Directorate launched
\ninspections<\/a> along the Euphrates River to identify sources of pollution,
\nsurveying factories, vehicle wash and lubrication stations, and sewage outlets
\nsuspected of discharging pollutants. The directorate fined the Al-Anbar
\nSewerage Directorate and filed a lawsuit over the continued release of
\nuntreated wastewater.<\/p>\n
