{"id":248904,"date":"2026-08-14T12:55:09","date_gmt":"2026-08-14T12:55:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/248904\/"},"modified":"2026-08-14T12:55:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-14T12:55:09","slug":"hormuz-crisis-pushes-asian-refiners-toward-u-s-oil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/248904\/","title":{"rendered":"Hormuz Crisis Pushes Asian Refiners Toward U.S. Oil"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"speakable\">North Asian refiners have increased buying activity to secure U.S. crude oil supply as an alternative to the Middle Eastern crude that may not make it outbound from the Strait of Hormuz as the U.S.-Iran stalemate continues and the chokepoint remains effectively closed.<\/p>\n<p>At least four Asia-based refiners have bought U.S. crude volumes this week alone, traders told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/asian-refiners-buy-more-us-crude-hormuz-remains-blocked-traders-say-2026-08-14\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Reuters<\/a> on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>This week, tanker traffic \u2013 and shipping traffic as a whole \u2013 at the Strait of Hormuz has <a href=\"https:\/\/oilprice.com\/Latest-Energy-News\/World-News\/Hormuz-Tanker-Traffic-Slumps-as-US-Iran-Standoff-Drags-On.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">slumped further<\/a>, according to observable transits with AIS positioning on.<\/p>\n<p>Amid the Hormuz stalemate, Asian refiners are looking further afield for alternative supply as tight fuel markets and sky-high refining margins encourage refinery runs, if there is enough crude available.<\/p>\n<p>In the deals this week, GS Caltex of South Korea bought 2 million barrels of Mars crude from Shell for delivery in November, at a premium of $13-14 above the Dubai benchmark for October, according to Reuters\u2019 trade sources.<\/p>\n<p>Cosmo Energy Holdings, one of the biggest refiners in Japan, also bought Mars, from commodity trader Trafigura.
