In yet another remark that triggered alarm around the world, President\u00a0Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0said Friday that he planned to declare the Strait of Hormuz \u2013 which Iran has blockaded for much of the past five months over his and Israel\u2019s illegal war \u2013 a US territory.<\/p>\n

Just two days after the latest\u00a0inflation<\/a>\u00a0figures\u00a0demonstrated<\/a>, in the words of one expert, \u201cTrump\u2019s catastrophic mismanagement of our economy,\u201d the president ignored the economic fallout from his war, which led Iran to restrict ship traffic through the strait, driving up fuel prices worldwide.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re bringing the prices way down,\u201d he\u00a0told<\/a>\u00a0a Long Island crowd. Trump also said that \u201cafter we finish defeating Iran, which is being very badly defeated, pretty soon, I\u2019ll be declaring the Hormuz Strait a territory of the\u00a0United States<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some critics responded to clips of the comments on X by mocking Trump, who is infamous for his lies. Representative Ted Lieu (D-Calif.)\u00a0quipped<\/a>, \u201cAwesome! And the Easter Bunny is real.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ryan Costello, policy director at the National Iranian American Council,\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cthis jingoism rings a bit hollow when most of the US bases near the strait have been essentially abandoned due to danger from Iranian missiles and drones.\u201d<\/p>\n

Progressive political commentator Kyle Kulinski\u00a0declared<\/a>\u00a0that \u201che absolutely needs to be impeached, removed, and locked up. He\u2019s a completely unhinged lunatic, and he\u2019s a sadistic violent menace to the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

After high initial claims about lower prices, Trump admitted that gasoline has soared due to his war, but\u00a0said<\/a>: \u201cFor you to pay a tiny little bit more for your gasoline, just remember, you\u2019re doing it so that a very evil country cannot have a \u2013 a country, really it\u2019s the No. 1 state sponsor of terror in the world \u2013 we don\u2019t want to have them have a nuclear weapon. So, remember that when you have to pay a little bit more, you\u2019re at $4, it\u2019s OK. I\u2019ll never apologize. I did the right thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s threat over the strait between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman came just before a monthlong ceasefire between the US and Iran is set to expire on Monday. A senior\u00a0White House<\/a>\u00a0official\u00a0told<\/a>\u00a0Politico that the situation is \u201cstatic.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter how close or how far we are,\u201d said the official, who has heard no mention of a potential extension of the ceasefire. \u201cWhat matters is if Iran wants to come to the table and agree to a deal. Right now, they haven\u2019t done that.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Associated Press\u00a0reported<\/a>\u00a0Friday that \u201cthe\u00a0Trump administration<\/a>\u00a0appears to be reaching out to a broader swath of countries that might be able to help pressure\u00a0Tehran<\/a>,\u201d and Ali Vaez, Iran project director at the International Crisis Group, told the outlet that \u201ceveryone is just urging both sides to stop this reckless game of chicken.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to launching a war on Iran in February, and invading\u00a0Venezuela<\/a>\u00a0in January to abduct its president, Trump has made threats against various other nations during his second term, including\u00a0Canada<\/a>,\u00a0Cuba<\/a>,\u00a0Colombia<\/a>,\u00a0Greenland<\/a>, and\u00a0Mexico<\/a>. He\u2019s also threatened to seize the Panama Canal and killed hundreds of people by blowing up boats allegedly smuggling drugs.<\/p>\n
