Shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has slowed sharply this week, with no vessels recorded passing through the strategic waterway on Sunday, according to Kepler tracking data cited by Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n
The halt marks a significant decline from the same day a week earlier, when 31 vessels passed through the Strait of Hormuz, highlighting the growing disruption to one of the world\u2019s most important maritime energy routes.<\/p>\n
The decline in shipping comes amid heightened security concerns in and around the waterway. The United Arab Emirates said three vessels operated by ADNOC, the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, came under attack last week while transporting cargo.<\/p>\n
The attacks have further increased concerns among shipping operators about navigating the Strait, a critical passage connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the wider Indian Ocean. A prolonged reduction in maritime traffic could disrupt energy shipments and increase pressure on global oil and shipping markets.<\/p>\n
The latest developments also follow remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump claiming that the United States has full control of the Strait of Hormuz, adding to already heightened tensions surrounding the waterway.<\/p>\n
The Strait is a vital global trade route, particularly for oil and gas shipments from Gulf producers. Any sustained disruption to traffic could have wider consequences for energy supplies, transportation costs and international markets.<\/p>\n
The slowdown comes as tensions involving the United States and Iran continue to raise concerns over the security of maritime routes in the region.
