{"id":252378,"date":"2026-08-17T09:05:09","date_gmt":"2026-08-17T09:05:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/252378\/"},"modified":"2026-08-17T09:05:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-17T09:05:09","slug":"syria-and-cyprus-sign-deal-for-new-240km-subsea-cable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/252378\/","title":{"rendered":"Syria and Cyprus sign deal for new 240km subsea cable"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UNIFI Communications, the Syrian Telecommunications Establishment (STE) and the Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (CYTA) have partnered to build UGARIT 2, a 240-kilometre <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mobileeurope.co.uk\/?s=Subsea\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">submarine cable<\/a> linking Pentaskhinos in Cyprus with Tartous on Syria\u2019s Mediterranean coast.<\/p>\n<p>The project is aimed at improving Syria\u2019s international connectivity and helping rebuild its digital <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mobileeurope.co.uk\/tag\/infrastructure\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">infrastructure<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>It is also being described as the first major international infrastructure agreement to be signed under Syria\u2019s new economic framework.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mobileeurope.co.uk\/subscriptions\/?utm_source=Content+Snippet&amp;utm_medium=website&amp;utm_campaign=Subscribe&amp;utm_id=Newsletter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><br \/>\n  <img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%; max-width: 100%; display: block;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Newsletter-aug26-mobile3.gif\" alt=\"Sign up to our weekly newsletter\"\/><\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As part of the deal, UGARIT 2 will have 24 fibre pairs and an initial capacity of 31 Tbps, which can eventually be expanded to as much as 370 Tbps.<\/p>\n<p>The new cable will replace the original UGARIT system, which has provided Syria with international connectivity since 1995.<\/p>\n<p>Syria Minister of Communications and IT, H.E. Abdulsalam Haykal, said: \u201cSyria is building a digital hub at the crossroads of three continents.
