{"id":252872,"date":"2026-08-17T14:52:09","date_gmt":"2026-08-17T14:52:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/252872\/"},"modified":"2026-08-17T14:52:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-17T14:52:09","slug":"iran-threatens-to-escalate-tensions-in-hormuz-and-wider-region-if-diplomacy-with-u-s-fails","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/252872\/","title":{"rendered":"Iran threatens to escalate tensions in Hormuz and wider region if diplomacy with U.S. fails"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a style=\"display:block\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/resizer\/v2\/45X3RCA7LBE73FB7CGARFBL2FA.JPG?auth=fd1edb63afd1628c50e6dc743e3feeeecfb3811794b0492e5518131aa6082d30&amp;width=600&amp;height=400&amp;quality=80&amp;smart=true\" aria-haspopup=\"true\" data-photo-viewer-index=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Open this photo in gallery:<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"figcap-text\">Vessels near the Strait of Hormuz, as seen from Musandam, Oman, Monday.Stringer\/Reuters<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Iran has decided to shift its policy from defensive to \u201cfully offensive\u201d due to the deadlock in efforts to agree a permanent end to its war with the United States, a senior Iranian official told Reuters on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Progress toward peace talks and a resumption of oil tanker traffic through the strategic Strait of Hormuz has ground to a halt, with no sign that the warring parties are moving toward ending the conflict that the U.S. and Israel launched on Feb. 28.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cIranian entities must be prepared to escalate tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and wider region, as Iran will be ready to make decisions and take action on difficult decisions,\u201d the Iranian official said, adding that Tehran would conduct a \u201ctimely and precise\u201d military attack to break the U.S. naval blockade if diplomacy failed. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Monday marked the day by which Iran and the United States were expected to reach a final deal under a memorandum of understanding agreed in June and aimed at ending the war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Signed on June 17, the MoU set out a 60-day timeframe, extendable by mutual consent, by which Washington and Tehran should reach an agreement that would cover broader issues such as the fate of Iran\u2019s nuclear program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The MoU, which declared the immediate and permanent cessation of military operations on all fronts, quickly unravelled, however, due to a dispute over control of the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/world\/article-us-iran-peace-deal-60-day-deadline-expires\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Where the U.S.-Iran peace deal stands as a 60-day deadline expires<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Iran to set deadline<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Tehran said point 5 of the MoU gives it the right to manage the waterway, while Washington rejected that interpretation.
