Nationwide protests are now planned for Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Under President Ahmed al-Sharaa, who led the offensive that toppled al-Assad, establishing the rule of law has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/7\/8\/syria-grapples-with-unrest-as-government-faces-old-and-new-threats\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">remained a core challenge<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, the Latakia Internal Security Command said an investigation has been launched into the events that occurred while Gamira was being held at the Haffeh police station.<\/p>\n<p>Claims that Gamira, a father of two and former member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/gallery\/2025\/3\/2\/syrias-white-helmets-continue-to-help-people-in-devastated-aleppo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">White Helmets civil defence group<\/a>, was beaten at the police station emerged after photos were shared on social media showing him receiving intensive care at the Tishreen University Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>He is said to have been held for three days before his health deteriorated and he was transferred to medical care.<\/p>\n<p>Family members allege that security officers ignored warnings about Ghamira\u2019s chronic haemophilia and subjected him to severe, continuous physical abuse during a 72-hour period, triggering catastrophic internal bleeding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe sustained a brain haemorrhage as well as other internal bleeding in his abdomen, and he died last night,\u201d said Al Jazeera\u2019s Heidi Pett, reporting from Latakia on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Turning a page<\/p>\n<p>In a statement on Telegram, the Ministry of Interior\u2019s Security Command said the investigation would examine the circumstances of Gamira\u2019s detention and whether the procedures carried out against him complied with legal requirements.<\/p>\n<p>The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported the investigation would also take into account the young man\u2019s health condition.<\/p>\n<p>Interior Minister Anas Khattab expressed his condolences to Gamira\u2019s family. Any violations or misconduct by the Interior Ministry personnel would be dealt with \u201cfirmly\u201d in accordance with the laws, Khattab said in a statement on X.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone found responsible will receive their due punishment, regardless of who they are, once the investigations are completed,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The strength of the public reaction to the case illustrates fears that death and mistreatment in detention, while not nearly on the same scale as during the al-Assad era, appears to be continuing, said Pett.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen that regime fell, many Syrians hoped that those practices would also fall away, that the country was turning a page,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Under al-Assad, more than 200,000 people died in Syrian prisons, including through executions and torture, according to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.<\/p>\n<p>Among them was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/10\/22\/syria-arrests-former-officer-in-charge-of-notorious-sednaya-prison\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">notorious Sednaya prison<\/a> outside Damascus.
