In recent weeks, Iran has attacked ships transiting along the Omani coast to enforce its diktat that all ships must enter the Persian Gulf through the Iranian waters — not the Omani waters.

The UKMTO on Tuesday said that it received a report of a ship being attacked in the Strait of Hormuz.

The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said that the ship was struck off the coast of Oman near the port city of Khasab.

The UKMTO said that the attacked caused damage to the ship’s engine room and resulted in a crew casualty.

“The remaining crew are currently being assisted by the Omani Coast Guard. At present, no environmental impact has been reported. Authorities are investigating,” the UKMTO further said in a statement.

The update did not mention the name, flag, or registration of the ship, and the nationality of the casualty.

In recent weeks, Iran has targeted ships transiting along the Omani coast to enforce its diktat that all ships must enter the Persian Gulf through the Iranian waters — not the Omani waters. The two countries are also working on a plan to manage transit through the Strait together.

The development comes amid rising tensions between the United States and Iran after the expiration of the 60-day truce under the US-Iran interim deal. While US President Donald Trump launched the war with grand goals of destroying the Iranian nuclear programme, overthrowing the Islamic Republic, and installing a puppet regime, it turned into a stalemate and boiled down to a deadlock over the Strait of Hormuz as economic costs from the waterway’s closure mounted.

More from World

The interim deal —seen as a stepping-stone to the final peace deal— unravelled weeks earlier as Trump ordered strikes against Iran once Iran began enforcing its writ in the Strait under Article 5 of the Islamabad Memorandum — as Firstpost’s Madhur Sharma noted previously.

Currently, Iran and Oman are said to be in the final phases of negotiating a deal under which they would jointly manage the Strait. If Trump finds such a deal acceptable, the opening of the deal under such a deal’s framework could pave the way for a US-Iran deal that Trump has been desperate for. In the absence of any deal, strikes from the United States, Iran, and Yemen-based Houthis continue and traffic in the West Asian waters remains stalled.

[26
70213,34,143,57554,39,54157,7453,2483,146
post-253976","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-persian-gulf","tag-crew-casualty","tag-iran","tag-maritime-security","tag-oman-coast","tag-persian-gulf","tag-ship-attack","tag-strait-of-hormuz-attack","tag-ukmto","tag-us-iran-tensions
["GET
