{"id":254397,"date":"2026-08-18T12:59:14","date_gmt":"2026-08-18T12:59:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/254397\/"},"modified":"2026-08-18T12:59:14","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T12:59:14","slug":"syrian-court-sentences-detained-assad-cousin-to-death-for-crimes-against-humanity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/254397\/","title":{"rendered":"Syrian court sentences detained Assad cousin to death for crimes against humanity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">A Syrian court on Tuesday handed a death sentence to Wassim al-Assad who appeared in the dock, a cousin of long-time ruler Bashar al-Assad who was himself sentenced to death in absentia last week.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The 46-year-old relative of Assad was convicted over atrocities committed under the autocrat\u2019s rule during the country\u2019s nearly 14-year civil war.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Judge Fakhr al-Din al-Aryan said Assad\u2019s cousin was convicted of multiple murders and \u201cmurder accompanied by torture and brutality \u2026 classified as crimes against humanity and war crimes\u201d, adding that \u201che is therefore sentenced to death\u201d.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Syria in April began proceedings against Bashar al-Assad and other officials accused of atrocities during the country\u2019s civil war, which erupted with the brutal repression of pro-democracy protesters by the former authorities.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">More than half a million people were subsequently killed and millions displaced, while tens of thousands disappeared.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Judge Fakhr al-Din al-Aryan (centre) during the sentencing of Wassim al-Assad (right) at the Fourth Criminal Court in Damascus on Tuesday.
