{"id":254734,"date":"2026-08-18T16:51:25","date_gmt":"2026-08-18T16:51:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/254734\/"},"modified":"2026-08-18T16:51:25","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T16:51:25","slug":"trump-threatened-to-bomb-oman-because-hes-unhappy-with-countrys-deal-with-iran-officials-say-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/254734\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump threatened to bomb Oman because he&#8217;s unhappy with country&#8217;s deal with Iran, officials say"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CAIRO (AP) \u2014 U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to bomb Oman because he is unhappy the country is close to a deal with <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/iran\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Iran<\/a> to manage ship traffic through the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/strait-of-hormuz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Strait of Hormuz<\/a>, two regional officials said Tuesday, a day after Trump leveled the threat.<\/p>\n<p>The officials said the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/donald-trump\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trump<\/a> administration has told Oman it is opposed to parts of the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-us-israel-lebanon-gaza-hormuz-august-18-2026-9c48af23b713709e8e170191fbc78c2a\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">yet-to-be-announced deal<\/a>, including the joint Iranian and Omani management of the exit route out of the passage that\u2019s critical to global supplies of oil and natural gas. The officials were briefed on the U.S. position and how the administration views Oman\u2019s position.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a projectile hit a ship as it sailed out of the strait, according to the British military\u2019s maritime monitoring agency, and an Iranian official said the waterway would not reopen until the United States meets Iran\u2019s conditions.<\/p>\n<p>US believes Oman has not been tough enough with Iran<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. believes Oman has not been tough enough in its negotiations with Iran and is unhappy with Oman\u2019s agreement to collect voluntary fees from vessels, even if the charges are related to security and maritime environmental protection, according to the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to journalists.<\/p>\n<p>Trump on Monday <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-us-israel-lebanon-gaza-hormuz-august-17-2026-53ae10812e472a4e5bb228b9f318a5fc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">threatened to bomb<\/a> Oman as it works with Iran on a deal to open the strait and pave the way for the U.S. and Iran to resume negotiations to end the war.<\/p>\n<p>He posted a map on social media Tuesday depicting the strait as a U.S. territory. The president first mentioned the idea in an offhand comment last week. On Monday, he told reporters in the Oval Office, \u201cI like the idea of declaring it a territory,\u201d without providing details.<\/p>\n<p>The White House on Tuesday referred to Trump\u2019s remarks in the Oval Office and declined to comment further about Oman.<\/p>\n<p>Iran refers to Trump\u2019s \u2018delusion\u2019 about the strait<\/p>\n<p>Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi appeared to respond to Trump\u2019s post on social media depicting the strait as American territory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust as Trump correctly wrote the name of the eternal Persian Gulf, his delusion regarding the Strait of Hormuz will soon either be corrected, or we will correct this deluded man\u2019s delusions for him,\u201d Gharibabadi wrote on X.<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"AnchorLink\" id=\"html-embed-module-a00000\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n    Sign up for Morning Wire:<br \/>\n    Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day.\n  <\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s comment on Monday was not the first time he has threatened Oman. In May, he told reporters during a Cabinet meeting that Oman \u201cwill behave just like everybody else, or we will have to blow them up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Iran reiterated Tuesday that Tehran plans to maintain its <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-war-trump-strait-hormuz-f8d20baa977b2162ba235a1bbfd4246f\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">grip on shipping traffic<\/a> until Washington meets its conditions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUntil the United States fulfills its commitments under the agreement, including lifting the blockade, releasing frozen assets, lifting oil sanctions, ending threats and military operations on all fronts, and implementing the other conditions to which it committed, the Strait of Hormuz will not reopen,\u201d said Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, Iran\u2019s parliamentary speaker and negotiator in previous talks with the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>The Egyptian Foreign Ministry said Tuesday that the Iranian-Omani deal could pave the way for Washington and Tehran to <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-war-united-states-ceasefire-ad9fa27d5b1b5fd51e30d923ee738238\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">return to negotiations<\/a> for a \u201ccomprehensive and permanent deal that addresses all concerns and enhances regional security and stability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The statement came after a meeting between Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Omani counterpart Badr al-Busaidi. But it did not address Trump\u2019s latest threat against Oman.<\/p>\n<p>President insists strait is open as more attacks are reported<\/p>\n<p>Trump said Tuesday the U.S. has no planned talks with Iran but insisted the strait is \u201copen and operating,\u201d despite limited traffic, the reported boat strike and the end on Monday of the 60-day negotiating period between the countries.<\/p>\n<p>Trump wrote on social media that a U.S. blockade of the strait remains \u201cin full force and effect,\u201d adding that all water mines have been removed.<\/p>\n<p>As the talks between Iran and Oman continue, more attacks were reported in the region.<\/p>\n<p>An unidentified projectile hit a ship early Tuesday in the strait off the coast of Oman, damaging the engine room and causing a casualty, according to the U.K. Maritime Trade Operations center.<\/p>\n<p>The monitoring agency did not release any details about the ship or its cargo, and it was unclear whether the crew member was killed or wounded. The agency said the Omani Coast Guard was assisting other crew members and that authorities were investigating.<\/p>\n<p>And Yemen\u2019s Iran-backed Houthi rebels claimed they fired drones at an oil refinery in neighboring Saudi Arabia, the latest attack that threatened to reignite Yemen\u2019s civil war and open another front in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>The attack targeted a facility run by Saudi Aramco, Saudi Arabia\u2019s state-owned oil company, according to a report by the Houthi-run SABA news agency.
