Aug 18 (Reuters) – The U.S. Department \u2060of \u2060Justice on Tuesday unsealed \u2060new and updated charges against 17 individuals working with\u00a0an \u200bIranian company that it alleges carried out hacks and data theft against U.S. \u200cuniversities, companies and government agencies.<\/p>\n
The \u200cDOJ said in a statement that the individuals were working with \u2060the \u2060Mabna Institute, which carried out hacking campaigns on behalf of Iran\u2019s \u200bIslamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and other Iranian government and university clients.<\/p>\n
The campaigns targeted hundreds of U.S. and international universities, dozens of U.S. companies, and at least \u200bfive U.S. state and federal government agencies, it said.<\/p>\n
A previous indictment \u2060announced in \u2060March 2018 had charged \u2060nine \u200bof the 17 with a hacking campaign that targeted the U.S. Labor Department, \u200bthe United Nations \u2060and computer networks in Hawaii and Indiana.<\/p>\n
The Iranian government\u2019s representatives at the United Nations in New York did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Contact information for the Mabna Institute was not immediately available.<\/p>\n
The \u2060charges announced on Tuesday reveal \u201cthe broader network allegedly behind a sweeping, state-sponsored \u2060campaign to steal research and intellectual property from American universities, businesses, and government institutions,\u201d U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Jamie McDonald said in the statement.<\/p>\n
The U.S. State Department\u2019s Rewards for Justice program on Tuesday announced a $10 million reward for information leading to the location of several of the people included in Tuesday\u2019s charges.<\/p>\n
According to Tuesday\u2019s statement by the DOJ, the \u2060Mabna Institute since at least 2013 and through 2017 targeted more than 100,000 accounts of professors around the world, including the successful penetration of roughly 8,000 professor email accounts across 144 U.S.-based universities \u200band 178 universities in other countries.<\/p>\n
