{"id":256643,"date":"2026-08-19T20:17:09","date_gmt":"2026-08-19T20:17:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/256643\/"},"modified":"2026-08-19T20:17:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-19T20:17:09","slug":"lebanon-extradites-ex-assad-general-to-syria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/256643\/","title":{"rendered":"Lebanon extradites ex-Assad general to Syria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) \u2014 Lebanon on Wednesday extradited a former Syrian military officer under ousted President <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/syria-bashar-assad-war-1468a97ff95bb782f5933856d99c9a8d\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bashar Assad<\/a> and he will be put on trial in Syria, the Interior Ministry said.<\/p>\n<p>Maj. Gen. Adel Issa is the first military officer to be turned over by Lebanon since Assad\u2019s fall in late 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Lebanon\u2019s judicial authorities decided on Tuesday <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/lebanon-syria-assad-general-questioning-issa-0cfce6c3876741a9c55ee7b78e4442f8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to deliver<\/a> Issa to Syria, after questioning him over crimes he allegedly committed during the country\u2019s conflict.<\/p>\n<p>Syria\u2019s Interior Ministry said it had asked authorities in Lebanon to hand over Issa to Syria over alleged crimes including intentional killing of more than two persons, the crime of torture resulting in death, and acts of aggression aimed at inciting civil war and sectarian strife.<\/p>\n<p>The ministry added that Issa was the commander of the Syrian army\u2019s 17th Division and the commander of ground forces in the eastern province of Deir el-Zour until 2016. The ministry posted a photo of Issa wearing a prison uniform.<\/p>\n<p>Officials in Beirut said on Tuesday that Issa was turned over to Syria in accordance with a 1951 agreement between the countries that calls for delivering suspected criminals to face justice.<\/p>\n<p>After Syrian fighters opposed to Assad marched into Damascus to end the Assad family\u2019s five-decade rule in December 2024, a number of military and security officers fled to Lebanon, where some remain.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of other former members of his security agencies accused of atrocities have been arrested and put on trial in Syria.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, a Syrian court sentenced Assad and his younger brother Maher <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/syria-assad-death-trial-d4c486b5d39bbdb41108112b0ddc8e79\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to death<\/a> in absentia while their maternal cousin, Brig. Gen. Atef Najib, became the most senior security official to be sentenced to death while in custody. The Assad brothers fled to Russia during the ouster.<\/p>\n<p>Issa <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/lebanon-syria-assad-general-crimes-charges-961ced496686c367a1647dbe9cd4b136\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was detained<\/a> on Aug. 8 when he went to the Syrian Embassy in Beirut for some paperwork.
