{"id":257649,"date":"2026-08-20T12:43:24","date_gmt":"2026-08-20T12:43:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/257649\/"},"modified":"2026-08-20T12:43:24","modified_gmt":"2026-08-20T12:43:24","slug":"jewish-custodian-of-tomb-of-esther-in-iran-faces-antisemitic-abuse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/257649\/","title":{"rendered":"Jewish custodian of tomb of Esther in Iran faces antisemitic abuse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nejad Rassad, one of only a few dozen Jews remaining in Hamadan in western Iran, was subjected to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/diaspora\/antisemitism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">antisemitic<\/a> harassment by an Uzbek national outside the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/middle-east\/iran-news\/article-888507\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Tomb of Esther and Mordechai<\/a>, according to footage of the incident circulated by Iranian media this week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">The individual was identified by Independent Persian as Bakhtavar Qazaqov, who later published a video apologizing to the Iranian people for the incident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">\u201cYou [Jews] consider all of humanity to be animals and your servants,\u201d Qazaqov told Rassad, the mausoleum\u2019s custodian, in a video he recorded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Qazaqov also questioned Rassad about how many Jews live in Hamadan and replied, \u201cThank God,\u201d when Rassad answered that there were very few left.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">The Uzbek national also told Rassad that he had appeared in court in his home country after attacking a Jewish man, alleging that he expressed regret before the judge and pledged to \u201cnever beat a dog again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Following significant outrage on social media over the interaction, Qazaqov posted an apology video and claimed he had returned to the tomb to personally apologize to Rassad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs your fellow citizen, I apologize to you for having shown disrespect. I apologize to all the people of Hamadan and to all the dear people of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/middle-east\/iran-news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Iran<\/a>, as your fellow countryman,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Independent Persian noted that Qazaqov appeared to have some relationship with Iranian diplomats in his home country. In June, he appeared in photos gifting a portrait of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/tags\/ayatollah-ali-khamenei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ayatollah Ali Khamenei<\/a> to Hassan Safarkhani, the cultural relations adviser at the Islamic Republic of Iran\u2019s embassy in Tashkent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">In an Instagram post, Qazaqov also claimed that he had spoken with Safarkhani about \u201cIran\u2019s historical attractions, rich culture, and tourism potential\u201d and promised to make more videos touring Iran.<\/p>\n<p>Rassad, a former teacher, was notably interviewed by The New York Times in 2000, where he refused to comment on the arrest of 13 Jews from his community that authorities alleged were spying for Israel.
