A seafarers’ union has shared a video of speedboats attacking an Indian-crewed ship in the Strait of Hormuz and claimed the boats and attackers belonged to the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) of Iran. <\/p>\n

The Forward Seamen’s Union of India (FSUI) has shared a video of speedboats attacking an Indian-crewed ship in the Strait of Hormuz and claimed that the boats and their attackers belonged to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC).<\/p>\n

Videos of the April 22 incident show at least seven speedboats aggressively manoeuvring near the cargo ship along with shattered glass apparently caused by gunfire or other projectiles. Another video shows seafarers huddling in an alleyway for safety.<\/p>\n

A photograph shows a man holding a rocket-propelled grenade launcher. The FSUI said the launcher was aimed at the ship.<\/p>\n

“These were not pirates. They were naval forces of the IRGC. Videos show several small boats surrounding the vessel, the intensity of the confrontation, an RPG being fired, and the seafarers taking cover in the alleyways simply to protect their lives,” the FSUI said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Since the beginning of the West Asia conflict in February, Iran and its proxies have attacked ships across the region, and Indian-crewed vessels have frequently been targeted. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has said that at least 16 Indians, including 10 seafarers, were killed<\/a> in attacks between February and July.<\/p>\n

Ships have come under attack from multiple sides in the ongoing war. Iran and its proxies, such as the Yemen-based Houthis, have targeted ships linked to the United States or its allies, as well as vessels that did not follow their diktat to transit the strait via the northern route and the United States has attacked ships in the name of enforcing the blockade of Iran \u2014 experts have said such strikes violate international law<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Cargo ships have also come under attack in the Russia-Ukraine war. At least five Indian sailors were killed in the Black Sea last month<\/a> \u2014 four in a Russian attack and one in a Ukrainian attack.<\/p>\n
