{"id":25863,"date":"2026-03-18T23:47:22","date_gmt":"2026-03-18T23:47:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/25863\/"},"modified":"2026-03-18T23:47:22","modified_gmt":"2026-03-18T23:47:22","slug":"india-sends-warships-near-gulf-of-oman-to-escort-its-fuel-ships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/25863\/","title":{"rendered":"India Sends Warships Near Gulf of Oman to Escort Its Fuel Ships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By\u00a0Sudhi Ranjan Sen<\/p>\n<p>Mar 18, 2026 (Bloomberg) \u2013India is sending additional warships to the Gulf of Oman and Arabian Sea to ensure the safe passage of its vessels in anticipation that Iran may allow more of its fuel tankers to exit the Strait of Hormuz, people familiar with the matter said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Indian Navy is deploying over half a dozen warships, including logistics vessels to the area as a precautionary measure, the people said, asking not to be identified as the discussions are private. The warships will be stationed east of the Strait of Hormuz and won\u2019t enter the waterway, they said. Their objective would be to escort the vessels until they reach safer waters in the northern Arabian Sea.<\/p>\n<p>India\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-03-14\/two-lpg-ships-sail-through-hormuz-on-way-to-shortage-hit-india\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">secured<\/a>\u00a0the safe transit of two state-owned tankers carrying liquefied petroleum gas in recent days and is negotiating with Iran for several more fuel ships to be allowed through. The Strait of Hormuz has effectively been shut since the US and Israel began airstrikes on Iran in late February, causing acute gas\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-03-18\/firewood-3am-queues-fisticuffs-show-india-pain-from-lpg-crunch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">shortages<\/a>\u00a0in India, which gets about 90% of its LPG imports from the Middle East.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>New Delhi hasn\u2019t responded directly to US President Donald Trump\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-03-16\/trump-demands-help-from-other-countries-to-secure-hormuz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">demand<\/a>\u00a0that other countries send battleships to the strait to help ships pass through. Randhir Jaiswal, spokesman for India\u2019s Ministry of External Affairs, told reporters earlier this week that the matter wasn\u2019t discussed with the US \u201cin a bilateral setting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ministry and India\u2019s Navy didn\u2019t immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>India\u2019s longstanding policy is to participate in international military operations under a United Nations mandate, rather than aligning with unilateral actions of individual countries.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not unusual for India to send warships to protect commercial vessels in conflict zones.
