DUBAI, Aug 21 (Reuters) – Iranian parliament speaker Mohammed Baqer Qalibaf said on Friday that Iran \u200cmust plan to overcome “unjust sanctions”, a day \u200cafter U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced what he described as \u200bthe toughest sanctions ever imposed on Iran.<\/p>\n
Bessent said on Thursday the measures would be detailed on Monday, suggesting they could lessen the need for further major \u200cmilitary operations.<\/p>\n
Qalibaf, one of \u2060Iran’s most influential political figures and Tehran’s top negotiator in talks with the \u2060United States, said economic development and security were closely linked.<\/p>\n
He accused the United States and Israel of \u200bwaging economic \u200band “cognitive” warfare after concluding \u200bthey could not prevail \u200cin a direct military confrontation with Iran and Iraq.<\/p>\n
“If you look at the resources and raw materials of Muslim countries, you will realize that our enemies come to plunder them,” Qalibaf told Iranian and \u200cIraqi business representatives in Baghdad, \u200baccording to his Telegram channel.<\/p>\n
“Therefore, \u200bwe must make plans \u200bto deal with the unjust sanctions \u200cso that we can overcome \u200bthem.”<\/p>\n
He also \u200bcalled for stronger economic ties between Baghdad and Tehran and said the two countries could use \u200btheir national currencies \u200cin trade to reduce reliance on the \u200bU.S. dollar.<\/p>\n
