The Iraqi government on Friday reaffirmed September 30 as
\nthe deadline for bringing weapons under state control, saying it had informed
\narmed factions of the date and the mechanisms for addressing the issue.<\/p>\n
Speaking to the Iraqi News Agency (INA), government
\nspokesman Haider Al-Aboudi noted that talks with the factions are making
\nprogress and \u201cbased on the principles of state sovereignty and the interests of
\nthe Iraqi people.\u201d<\/p>\n
He explained that the government was seeking agreements that
\nwould address the weapons issue without affecting the country’s stability. \u201cThe
\ngovernment is addressing the issue through dialogue and understanding in a way
\nthat preserves state sovereignty and prevents any internal confrontation in
\nIraq.\u201d <\/p>\n
Al-Aboudi confirmed that six armed factions are involved in
\ntalks with the government over bringing weapons under state control. Some have
\nresponded positively to the government’s proposals, while others continue
\ndiscussions on mechanisms that would protect their interests as well as those
\nof the state.<\/p>\n
He stressed that Iraq and its institutions are \u201cabove any
\ninternal confrontation or conflict,\u201d adding that the government’s priorities
\ninclude preserving economic, political, and security stability and continuing
\nefforts to combat corruption.<\/p>\n
