href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/08\/16\/world-news\/iranians-set-to-face-harsh-prison-sentences-for-telling-the-world-whats-happening-inside-their-country-under-new-law\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">land Iranians in prison<\/a> for speaking to foreign media outlets \u2014 even if they speak to them when outside of the country \u2014 in the Islamic Republic\u2019s latest attempt to stifle the flow of information outside its borders.<\/p>\n<p>If the legislation is ultimately approved, which it is expected to be, communicating with any US news organization, foreign embassy or institution <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/05\/13\/world-news\/tehran-urges-struggling-iranians-to-be-frugal-as-economy-sinks-under-us-blockade\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deemed hostile to the regime<\/a> \u2014 even if the contact happens outside of Iran \u2014 could land Iranians in prison for up to two years.<\/p>\n<p>The lone exception is if the communication has been cleared by the regime\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Shargh newspaper reported.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" REUTERS<\/p>\n<p>Marjan, a brave political science student at Tehran University who declined to give her full name, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/iran-war-harsher-punishment-law-contact-foreign-entities-media\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">told CBS News<\/a> that the regime is becoming more hardline under the new supreme leader.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIran under the new leadership of Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei is going toward North Koreanization,\u201d she said, referring to the authoritarian regime in North Korea under Kim Jong Un. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think Mojtaba is much more hard-line and closed-minded than his father, and the country will become a completely restricted and isolated country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The impending free speech crackdown for the country\u2019s 93 million residents comes amid a wave of reports unflattering to the regime, such as Iranians <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/08\/10\/world-news\/irans-misery-index-hits-record-high-and-about-to-get-worse-under-trumps-economic-blockade\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">struggling to make ends meet<\/a> as its war with the US nears its sixth month.<\/p>\n<p>Soaring inflation and unemployment has left some in the Islamic republic to reportedly start\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/08\/06\/world-news\/irans-economy-nears-breaking-point-as-citizens-steal-basic-groceries-to-get-by-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">stealing food to survive<\/a>\u00a0or forego medical treatment to save money.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"   data-modal-image=\"40453553\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" already has strict laws prohibiting sending information to the US and UK government-funded VOA Farsi and BBC Farsi, as well as any exiled, foreign-backed Iranian media outlets.<\/p>\n<p>However, the new resolution effectively criminalizes any written or verbal contact with foreigners, especially media \u2014 and imposes stiff penalties for doing so.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tStart your day with all up!\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>The legislation further tightens the regime\u2019s stranglehold on its population by banning educational and research activities with foreign ties, with anyone found to be involved in activities deemed \u201cincompatible with Iranian culture\u201d subject to potential 10-year prison terms.<\/p>\n<p>Another element of the proposed legislation would severely punish any policy or legislative proposals made under the direction of foreign intelligence services that may harm Iran\u2019s security or independence.<\/p>\n<p>Cases such as those would be tried by regime-friendly Revolutionary Courts, and those found guilty would face up to 30 years in prison.<\/p>\n<p>The Islamic Republic passed a similar law following last year\u2019s 12-day war, which was
