Fears of a military confrontation between Israel<\/a> and Turkey<\/a> are growing after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu<\/a> sought to assert dominance over Syria<\/a> by ordering air strikes on a military airfield near the Turkish border.<\/p>\n

The eight strikes on the Abu Al-Duhur airbase in northwest Idlib province on Tuesday were characterised by Netanyahu as a warning to Turkey against expanding its military presence in Syria or helping rebuild the Syrian armed forces.<\/p>\n

Netanyahu\u2019s office claimed Israel and Syria had agreed to \u201ca status quo in security matters\u201d, which Damascus was \u201con the verge of breaching\u201d by permitting Turkish troops to deploy at the airbase near Aleppo.<\/p>\n

\u201cIsrael repeatedly warned Syria that such a deployment would pose a threat to Israel\u2019s security. Syria chose to ignore these warnings,\u201d Netanyahu\u2019s office said in a statement issued on Tuesday evening.<\/p>\n

The following day, the Israeli leader reframed the strikes as a \u201cmessage\u201d that he would not tolerate a Turkish military entrenchment in Syria that \u201cadvances southward, because it threatens us\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe conveyed that message: don\u2019t,\u201d Netanyahu told Israeli Army Radio. \u201cBut apparently they didn\u2019t hear it, so we made sure they understood it better\u201d.<\/p>\n
